LETTER

Hello hello hello,

LONDON

Last week was particularly travel heavy. Peculiar planning – it just so happened. ■ First, a big thanks to magazine conference MagCulture for having me speak about Fantastic Man, BUTT and the greater family of magazines and media that we feel indebted to. ■ Some of the other riveting speakers on the day included NACHO ALEGRE from ‘Apartamento’, and DAVID UZQUIZA taking us through an issue-by-issue history of his mesmerising ‘Buffalo Zine’. See here for some scenery. And thank you DASHTI JAHFAR for the photo.

PARIS

We launched the second title of our new book imprint DROP BOOKS last Friday night at The Broken Arm in Paris. ■ ‘Wildness’ is a collaboration between Fantastic Man’s JOP VAN BENNEKOM, photographer MARK BORTHWICK and fashion designer DURAN LANTINK celebrating the designer’s recent ‘Duranimal’ collection. ■ Look above, that’s DURAN and MARK signing late into the Parisian night. (Photo by LU PHILIPPE GUILMETTE.)

WILDNESSNESS

‘Wildness’ is available through our webshop in a very limited edition (only 500 numbered copies) so be quick. ■ Readers are treated to a wild rollercoaster of images, shot in March and July of this year in Paris. It features DURAN’s already legendary silicon boob tops, zebra and snake prints, super-3D knitwear as well as a bicycle and an ironing board. In true MARK BORTHWICK style, it’s a huge series of images that screams joy, in which you’ll keep discovering newness on every flip-thru. ■ And if you’re ready for some further reading, many of the contributors to this book have featured in our magazines before. There’s the big BORTHWICK cover story from last season’s Fantastic Man, my 2021 piece on DURAN, a profile of casting director PIERGIORGIO DEL MORO from our current issue, a great story on supermodel LEON DAME (also seen above) from last year and an interview with HOLLI SMITH in BUTT – she did the fabulous hair for DURAN’s shows and ‘Wildness’. Order now!

MILAN

In Milan, I caught up with designer LUCA MAGLIANO (he’s just moved there from Bologna) and we chatted about my favourite men’s garment, the henley T-shirt. ■ MAGLIANO just made one in his recently launched MAGLIANO NUDO line. With its button placket and centre-chest label it recalls a popular LEVI’S style in rib cotton from the 1990s. “I always love rib cotton,” said LUCA. “And I like how a henley is neither a formal shirt nor a T-shirt, but something right in between.” He also thinks of it as a very Italian garment. (I disagree, it’s universal.) ■ He mentioned ADRIANO CELENTANO, an Italian popstar of yesteryear, as a sexy henley-sporting heartbreaker. (Not literally the same shirt style, but this video shows CELENTANO’s chest quite nicely too and you’re welcome to use your imagination.) ■ In a way things are going full circle. The other day pop star RICKY MARTIN was seen on stage in the MAGLIANO NUDO henley we’re talking about, as was (above) American actor TYRIQ WITHERS. Fashion tip for next summer…

I’m back in Amsterdam, and hope to dedicate a next Fantastic Man newsletter to the debut of Fantastic Man China!
