Click here ![]() Kia Ora , At the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce, one of the things we dedicate ourselves to is effective advocacy, ensuring your business interests are well-represented at every relevant forum. Our work involves ongoing collaborations with Local and Central Government, the Regional Council, Wellington Regional Leadership Committee, Workforce Development Councils, Industry Associations, and other organisations. We advocate on your behalf on a variety of issues, from the implications of rate changes to the development of long-term strategies and major infrastructure projects. Our role is to be a connection between you and the decision-makers. By understanding both the operational challenges you face and the strategic opportunities within our region, we can communicate more effectively and push for policies that encourage business growth and stability. This includes participating in discussions around resource allocations, planning regulations, and economic development initiatives that directly affect your business. We know you are busy so we can do this on your behalf. Currently, our focus is on the long-term plans being deliberated by both the Upper Hutt City Council, Hutt City Council and the Wellington Regional Council. These plans will determine the trajectory of our community’s development over the next decade. It is crucial that the business community's perspective is well-represented in these discussions, as the outcomes will impact all aspects of local commerce. To ensure your voice is heard in these vital plans, please contribute your thoughts to us, or directly to the Upper Hutt City Council here, for Hutt City Council here, and for the Greater Wellington Regional Council here. Alternatively, send your feedback to me at patrick@hvchamber.org.nz. The more detailed your feedback, the more precise our advocacy can be. ![]() A Huge Thank you to all our Partners for your continued support. ![]() ![]() In this edition of the Hutt Valley Business Weekly:

National News
The following news is provided to keep our business leaders up to date. Roads of National Significance planning underway ![]() The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has signalled their proposed delivery approach for the Government’s 15 Roads of National Significance (RoNS), with the release of the State Highway Investment Proposal (SHIP) today, Transport Minister Simeon Brown says. “Boosting economic growth and productivity is a key part of the Government’s plan to rebuild the economy, and I’m pleased to see NZTA moving at pace in putting forward their proposed approach to deliver on the 15 RoNS,” Mr Brown says. Over the next three years NZTA plans to begin construction on a number of the RoNS and establish a 10-year construction pipeline. NZTA will also look to accelerate project development through fast-track legislation, as well as seek new sources of funding and financing to ensure timely delivery. “In addition to the RoNS, the SHIP also includes other key commitments like the additional Waitemata Harbour Crossing, Northwest Rapid Transit Corridor, and increased investment in road maintenance and renewals. New Fast Track Projects advisory group named ![]() The coalition Government has today announced the expert advisory group who will provide independent recommendations to Ministers on projects to be included in the Fast Track Approvals Bill, say RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop and Regional Development Minister Shane Jones. “Our Fast Track Approval process will make it easier and faster to build regionally and nationally significant projects as part of the Government’s plan to rebuild the economy and get it working for all Kiwis. It is only through a strong economy that we can solve the cost of living crisis, lift incomes and afford the public services Kiwis deserve.” “The advisory group members are David Tapsell, Rosie Mercer, Vaughan Wilkinson, David Hunt, Mark Davey and Murray Parrish,” Mr Bishop says. “Collectively they bring many years’ experience working on infrastructure and economic development projects, environment and conservation initiatives, with local government and on Treaty of Waitangi arrangements. ![]() NZ Workforce Development Council Disability Employment Research - Employer Survey ![]() Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council (WDC), in collaboration with Waihanga Ara Rau WDC, has commissioned All is for All, with support from the Donald Beasley Institute, to conduct a research project to better support work and training for Disabled People in our sectors. The link will remain open until Wednesday, 8 May 2024. The battle of non-tradable inflation. ![]() ![]() As has been the recent trend, a rapid deceleration in imported (tradable) inflation continues to carry headline inflation lower. Last quarter saw a 0.2% decline in imported inflation. And we’re likely to see further deflation in the March quarter, bringing down the annual rate to 2.2%. That’s strokes away from the 8.7% peak recorded in June 2022. The RBNZ expects a far deeper decline to 1.5%, with 0.8% deflation in the quarter. But with tradables, being out of the RBNZ’s control, the focus is on domestic (non-tradable) inflation. That’s the RBNZ’s primary concern. It’s domestic price pressures that they can influence. And a return to the RBNZ’s 2% target midpoint hinges on a moderation in domestic inflation. Domestic inflation has peaked and continues to fall, but at a frustratingly slow pace. And the ripple effects of migration adds upside pressure, especially when it comes to housing. The surge in migration continues to drive rents, which are estimated to have jumped around 1.1% over the quarter. Rental inflation continues to creep higher. Annually, rents are running at around 4.6% - high above the circa 3% pre-covid rates. A continued slowdown in home construction costs will likely provide some offset. Cost pressures remain strong, but are easing. The December quarter saw building costs fall steeply to 3.6%yoy. While still elevated, it is a far cry from the 18% peak recorded late in 2021.We expect an encouraging fall to 5.4% on an annual basis, down from 5.9% and further away from
the 6.8% peak. The RBNZ expects a slightly deeper drop to 5.3%. A print below will likely strengthen the view that we’re nearing interest rate cuts. ![]()

Modern Selling #3: Stop sending quotes. ![]() Often when people contact me, they want to talk about proposing and closing. Inevitably, the question is how do they create winning proposals and how do they close more deals? The answers can be many and varied depending upon the sector, the offering, the end customer’s buying process and a host of other variables. But there is one underlying mistake I see salespeople make - they confuse a ‘proposal’ with a ‘quote’. Understanding the difference is critical to closing more deals, sooner. Quote or proposal. A quote tells the customer how much they'll have to pay for your offer, when they can have it, and attaches the terms and conditions. ![]() Your Sales 101 – Interview with Sales Expert Dave Knight.Dive into the essentials of sales with Dave Knight, a leading expert in the field, in our podcast "Your Sales 101."
