Fabulous Island Time Party

Tim & Carol Petersen with Commodore Blackmore

The crowd toasting the Petersens during the christening of their new boat Sea Breeze

All decked out for the Party

Packed Deck!

Mahalo (thanks), to all those who helped on Island Time 2013!

We started off mid morning with decorations, Vice Commodore Winston was there to set up the Tiki bar with his FCM (Frozen Concoction Machine).  Once the bar was set up, it was realized that the sun would be too hot & tents were needed, along came Laurie Holmstrom and April Given to help raise not one, but 3 tents outdoors.

Then the flags... Commodore Winston led in putting up flags around the railing. Tim Peterson came in to help with tables and chairs.  In the mean time, OD/Sous Chef Steve Holmstrom (soon to be field promoted to Executive Chef for the day) started preparing the Fijian Coconut Fish Appetizer.   Soon joined by Ann McDonough and Robin Mayne, the galley was busy finishing off the appetizer, making the Huli Huli sauce for the chicken, preparing the pineapple upside down cake, making the salad dressing... then Lena joined us and prepared the strawberries for the salad.  Time is moving on... Robin helped Steve with the Polynesian Rice.  Time for the BBQ Ribs, Chicken and Salmon, enter Past Commodore Byron Jacobs. Once pre-cooked, the ribs and chicken were finished on the barbecue by Byron and Lena.  Then the Copper River Salmon that had been marinating in secret sauce, were placed on planks to cook with 30 minutes to go before serving... They were huli hulied (coated over & over) and were ready for serving by April, Olivia Sadlowski and Robin.  Olivia turned out to be the Energizer Bunny and stayed on to the end, serving and refilling the dishes until all were satisfied.  But we have focused on the galley... there was more to this Herculean performance.  In the bar was  Larry Mayne, Ann McDonough, Phaedra Fisher and Kathy Harris, and some other members that I probably missed.  Somehow Ann McDonough managed to also check everyone in.  Once it was on the down hill run, Rear Commodore Dan was there in the galley with Mike and Connie Warner to do all those dishes, chafing dishes, etc.  The galley looked better after than before!   But the amazing reformation was performed by Tim Petersen.  Over 100 pounds of ribs, chicken and fish with a couple of gallons of special sauce had been cooked on the BBQ - it was a mess!  Tim managed to clean it up to a spotless status.

I hope I did not miss anyone, apologies if I did!  But the bottom line, thanks to all who helped out and to those who attended Island Time 2013!

Great Race and Party

Ahoy Sequioa

Saturday the 27th July was a great day at our club

We had a fantastic combo of the Westpoint Regatta and the Island Time party - both great annual events

This was the fifth Westpoint Regatta and we had fifteen boats race down the Bay on a glorious day - good winds for racing and perfect conditions, so a fast time by everyone. Notably the race fleet got into close quarters with an Oracle 72 and John Draeger had the pleasure of calling 'STARBOARD' to  the Oracle boat. They took it well and lined the decks as John and Yellow Brick Road had the right of way. Also checkout the video of Nico Popp and crew crossing the Oracle Team. Pretty cool! Rich Butts called a good course and Mark Sanders who sponsors the race did his usual very gracious job of awarding prizes and congratulations to the winners. Congratulations to Head Rush,  Charlie Watts and crew for coming in first in spinnaker division and Iowa, Rick Dalton and crew for first in non-spinnacker division.

We then had a fun boat christening. Tim and Carol Petersen and their new boat, Sea Breeze, had a marvelous gathering. Neptune is duly appeased and may the Petersen's have many fun times on their new boat!

The decks and house were packed as we then enjoyed the annual Island Time Party hosted by Steve and Laurie Holmstrom who did us proud. They were supported by many club members. The Tiki Bar added a fun choice of Island cocktails to the club bar! The club was decorated with many flags, palm trees and Tiki gods to help the party atmosphere. We had a tremendous turn out and the club was busy late into the evening.

Sequoia rocks and what could be better than a great race followed by a great party! It was really good to see you all there.

It is a great year at Sequoia thanks to all of you

Anita and Ron Visit on August 9th

Hello Sequoia,
Some of you may remember us, Anita Giani (Commodore 2002) and Ron Feldman. We hope so, because we are going to be in the Bay Area and would really like to visit the club and see some of our old friends -- and even some new ones if they want to stop by. We realize that there is no DID on Friday, August 9, but that's the night that works best for our schedule. We will be at the club at 5pm with Ron and Joan Stingley. We will bring some munchies. Who knows but some of us may ever wind up going out to dinner somewhere. We will just see what happens.

By the way, some of you will remember that we left in 2004 for San Diego. After a year there, we joined the Baja Ha-Ha class of 2005 and headed toward Mexico. After almost three years, we sold our beloved Liberty Call II in Mexico and settled in Pass Christian, Miss., Anita's home town. She is on the board of the Pass Christian Yacht Club now as well as being active in the community. Ron fishes, sometimes plays golf and really enjoys Pickleball. (see www.pickleball.com); he is Gulf Coast Ambassador for the Pickleball Association. Life is good.

We are really looking forward to our visit and hope to see some of you there on Friday, August 9. We are sure that some folks will still be in the Delta and will be sorry to not see you, but maybe next time we will schedule our visit better.

8th Annual Hannig Cup Race - August 28th

Wed Aug 28 18:00

We have contributed over $1 million to local charities. This year we sorely miss Kristin Butler who was our guardian angel/worker for many years. This year's schedule conflicts also likely will preclude our past celebrity guests but will allow us to focus on a key charity cause: Floating Doctors.

The will be a great dinner provided by the Sea Scout.

There is a $100 donation to youth sailing for every boat racing up to $5,000. Get your boat out there!!!

Thanks Rick Dalton for helping make this happen!!!

More information coming soon!

Half Moon Bay Cruise Out

Join us for our annual blue water cruise-out over Labor Day weekend.  The plan is:

Friday 8/30:
make your way up the Bay somewhere with your boat, preferably in the early afternoon with the ebb.  Metridium will likely anchor at Aquatic Park, but we don't raft up at Aquatic Park.  Or wait and leave Redwood City Saturday morning.  1kt ebb peaks at 1pm at the San Mateo Bridge.

Saturday 8/31:
meet up just outside Aquatic Park at noon, if you'd like to catch the start of the ebb out the Gate and travel in loose convoy.  Or meet us in Half Moon Bay.  If it happens to be foggy, arrange a "radar or AIS buddy".  Anchor in Half Moon Bay, relax for the afternoon, then enjoy cocktails, appetizers and a potluck dinner on the rafted boats.  A dinghy with an outboard will be useful.

Sunday 9/1:
Dinner out, probably at Flavor
http://www.flavoronthecoast.com

Monday 9/2:
leave Half Moon Bay around 8am to catch the flood at the gate until 1pm, then sail back to Redwood City.

Let us know if you'd like to join us, either by boat or blacktop, and how many would like to go out to dinner Sunday night.

Executive Producer and Director: Kathy Harris

Nominating Committee

Ahoy Sequoians,

It is with great pleasure that I announce the members of this year’s Sequoia Yacht Club Nominating Committee:

Larry Mayne
Kathy Harris
Dan Doud
Linda Ryan
Steve Holmstrom
Kate Humphreys (Chair)

I am very happy to have members with such a wealth of experience and breadth of knowledge about the club on the committee.  I am also thankful to those who offered their services.  Unfortunately (or fortunately!) we had more interest than slots.

Though our time is short this year, we want to make sure that everyone who has an interest in serving on the board has a chance to throw their hat in the ring and be heard.  I will be posting a sign-up sheet at the club for members who wish to be considered for a position – please indicate your name and which position is of interest.  In the alternative, please feel free to contact any of the members of the committee and let us know of your interest.  The qualification requirements for consideration are listed in our bylaws in Article X, Section 2. The period to let us know will run until August 14th so that we have time to properly consider all parties interested, choose and announce our slate by August 25th (as required by the bylaws).

Thank you and good luck to all!!  Let the process begin!!

Kate
