Webinar Series: Towards 2030

The series focuses on the actions needed to meet the global climate goals by 2030.
At this time of turbulence the focus is necessarily on immediate COVID-19 recovery strategies, nonetheless the medium-term process of climate goal setting continues. The world’s nations will meet at the international climate negotiations in Glasgow in November 2021 to evaluate all countries’ climate commitments. It is important to analyse the actions required during this crucial decade.

The recordings are now available to watch online:

The US Election: A Turning Point for the Paris Agreement?
Roy Neel and Catherine Flowers are US political specialists who provided perspectives on how climate change is playing out in the lead up to the election and speculated as to how the outcome will affect the US’ position in relation to the Paris Agreement and domestic and international climate action more broadly. We explored how climate change and environmental justice have been prominent in the primaries and candidate commitments from the Democrats and explore the current Republican discourse.

Driving Clean Investment and the Costs of Inaction
Professor Tom Kompas explores his recent research which quantifies damages of climate impacts, and models the economic benefits of strong climate action. Emma Herd discusses the opportunities for business from clean investment strategies and the risks businesses face if they fail to adapt to a decarbonising economy. Ian Learmonth provides learnings on how to facilitate clean energy investment and the types of relative low cost investments that need to be accelerated to achieve the 2030 goals.

The Case for Urgent Climate Action
Professor Tim Flannery and Dr Sophie Lewis discussed the Paris climate targets in the context of the latest scientific modelling and assessment. Blending climate science, social science and communications perspectives, this webinar will explain why the next decade of climate action matters and what is at stake if we fail to seize the opportunities presented.

Climate Adaptation and the 2030 Horizon
This webinar examined perspectives on adaptation from Australia to the Pacific islands and discusses the types of action and investment required to support implementation on time and at scale. Looking toward 2030, what is at stake? What are the major adaptation challenges and solutions? What investments will be needed?
