The announcement last week, is the latest in a string of awards already presented to the winery this year. Notable at Trophy Wine Show (OMTWS), however, was the significantly high standard of competitors the championship attracted this year. Overall quality across almost all classes was a “striking feature” of the entries, according to long-serving panel convenor Michael Fridjhon. Singled out among them was the Kleine Zalze Brut Méthode Cap Classique 2013, which received the Trophy for the Best Sparkling Wine, and the Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Chenin Blanc 2018, which claimed the Harold Eedes Trophy for Best Chenin Blanc. "All the hard yards put in over the years are now paying dividends. Richly deserved," tweeted veteran wine judge Fiona McDonald, who serves on several local and international panels including Platter’s South African Wine Guide. Kleine Zalze owner and managing director Kobus Basson welcomed the recognition. “Excellence is a fundamental pursuit that influences every decision and action we take, as the OMTWS judges have again affirmed. The best performers from Kleine Zalze stretches across varieties, vintages, styles and price points,” he says. “The awards have also been a huge morale booster in what has been a torrid year not just for us, but the entire industry.” The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards, announced their results just two days after the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. Again, Kleine Zalze excelled with the winery receiving Platinum for the Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2019 – one of only 24 entries to do so and, Double Gold for the Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2019. Six Gold medals were also awarded to Kleine Zalze for the Vineyard Selection Chenin Blanc 2019, Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Shiraz 2016, Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Shiraz 2017, Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Chardonnay 2020, and Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Chenin Blanc Bush Vines 2020. “The achievements are certainly a credit to the entire winemaking and viticultural team,” says Kleine Zalze cellar master Alastair Rimmer. “They reflect many years of hard work and constant refinement that continues to take place at the hand of a talented, cohesive and intuitive team focused on Kleine Zalze’s legacy of classic wines of elegant intensity.” Order wines from the Kleine Zalze online store at https://shop.kleinezalze.co.za/.
