Dear Regent College families,

Welcome to this final Regent News for 2015.

I would like to begin by thanking each of you for the warm welcome I have received, in my first year as Principal.

A few reflections.

One particularly enjoyable routine that I have, is just stepping outside the office and interacting with students, as they sit and eat in 'the quadrangle'. As many of you would know, it really is quite a unique little space.  I think it actually captures the essence of what makes Regent College so special - the togetherness, the community.

I have appreciated the opportunity to share some ideas about learning with students, during assemblies. I think it is important for students, and the school, to develop a familiar language associated with learning. For example, we started talking about personal bests. This simple concept can really ignite excitement within the learner, as he or she tries to improve, and beat their previous best. It also has this amazing way of drawing students together as they support one another in beating their previous record.

I would like to thank the many parents who recently completed the Online Parent Survey; it helped identify a few areas that we can focus on as a school. One of those is offering greater 'extra-curricular' opportunities. Hopefully we should see some of these opportunities grow during next year.

There are many significant contributors in the school community, but I would like to acknowledge the wonderful Regent staff, as we finish the school year. I feel truly blessed to be working alongside them.

Finally, last week we shared a precious time as students, staff and parents came together to focus on the nativity message, performed by students, accompanied by the choir and staff on instruments.

I do pray and trust that families will make time to be still and reflect upon the message of Christmas, in coming weeks. The perfect gift of Jesus, from a loving God.

God bless,

Derek Nicholls. Principal

Announcement. Deputy Principal

The College is pleased to announce that Mrs Jacqueline Quinlivan will commence the 2016 school year as the new Deputy Principal. Jacqueline commences the role with vast experience as an educator and school leader. The College congratulates Jacqueline on her successful appointment to the role.

Reports and placements. 2016

The final day of school for Regent College students is this Friday 11th December. Students in Years PP-5 will receive their Semester 2 Report and also their class placement information for 2016; that is, who they will have as their teacher. Parents of current kindergarten students should receive class placement information on Monday, via mail. Full class lists will be made available on the Friday prior to school recommencing 2016.

Students can respond quite differently when learning who their next teacher will be, or what friends will/will not be in their future class. Some students feel excited, some nervous and some seemingly indifferent.

Most importantly, it is essential that students see their parents responding positively. On the whole, children actually adapt very well to change, as long as they receive the right emotional support. If a child is somewhat anxious about the next school year, without talking about it too much, mums and dads can speak positively about the terrific new opportunities for learning and friendship.

It is healthy for children to try new combinations of friendship from year to year. Even as adults, we can feel a bit nervous starting or trying new things - we've just learnt how to work through our emotions. We can be great supporters for our children as they too learn this important life skill.

Teachers and schools invest significant effort into class placements for students. There is a combination of factors, including the intended balance of gender, friendship, social skills, achievement and student needs. Please plan to support the final decision of the College, trusting that our intention is, what is in the best interest of your child.

Dates. 2016

Dates for 2016 can be located on the College Website - follow the link, below.

Please note that staff are attending a conference on the 2nd and 3rd of June next year, the Thursday and Friday before the WA Day long weekend. Parents might appreciate this advance notice, if they would like to make the most of the extended mid-term break. These will not be additional professional learning days (student free days). At this stage, the total number of College scheduled student free days will remain unchanged from 2015.

School resumes (Year PP-6) on Monday 1st February 2016. Kindergarten families should refer to their staggered start schedules.

Canteen. Thank you

The College would like to sincerely thank canteen coordinator, Mrs Michelle Billet, for her amazing management of the College canteen during 2015.

Thank you, also, to the following parents who volunteered in the canteen this year. Without these volunteers, the service would not exist each week:

Meredith Mora, Jeanie Phillips, Yunn Woo, Rebecca Dicker, Rebecca Gardiner, Jocelyn Lee, Danielle Norling, Monique Arianto, Kristen Phillips, Mika Revell, and to the many that just stopped by when they noticed the canteen was short staffed.

Finally, please note that the College canteen is not operating this final Friday of the school year.

College Administration. Over the break

The College is closed from next Friday 18th December. Families can still leave telephone messages, or send emails, as required. These will be checked at various times over the Christmas period and summer break.

College Administration will re-open from 21st January 2016

Postcards

This term the Kindergarten classes have been receiving 'mysterious' postcards from around the world. Last week, to celebrate some of the countries they have been receiving postcards from, the students had a fun filled day of activities. These included: paddling in the Great Barrier Reef, building the Island of Hong Kong, making pizzas, writing Chinese and eating croissants.

Sandcastles

After reading books about the beach and sandcastles, the year 1s worked in groups to build their own sandcastles.  First, they planned their design and listed the materials they would need.  Then they built their sandcastles and decorated them using shells, rocks and seaweed.

Endangered Animals

In class 2.1 this term, we have been following a theme of endangered animals. We read the book ‘Sebastian Lives in a Hat’, which is about a wombat that lives in a hat.  Amazingly, the next day we found a wombat in our classroom!  We have had turns   taking him home and completing a diary of his adventures, with each person in our class.  Whilst he has been with us each day in the classroom, we have looked after him and he has helped us with our lessons. Here he is in a constructed home that we made for him during a maths lesson.

& Scitech

Recently, we were fortunate enough to visit Scitech with all the year 2’s. We had the opportunity to pretend being astronauts for the morning; some of us were able to try on space suits. We also got to sit in a rocket simulator, that shook just like we were in a real rocket! It was so much fun!

We live in a world surrounded by technology and we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works. Only a tiny fraction of us are learning computer science and less students are studying it than a decade ago.

That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 7-13). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.

Our Hour of Code is a statement that Regent College is ready to teach these foundational 21st century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge.

This is a chance to change the future of education in Perth

See http://hourofcode.com/au for details, and help spread the word.

BRAVE

BRAVE. in being me. in relationships. in the future

Recently, the Year 6 students participated in a single day program, titled BRAVE (photos above). The boys and the girls enjoyed different activities across the day, with a focus about having courage, or being brave, in being myself, in my relationships, and in my future.  Of course, the focus was very relevant for students who are finishing up their primary school life, and readying for new adventures.

The College would like to especially thank Mrs Gai Irvine, Mrs Jessica Judd, Mr Cleon Rempel, and Mr Stephen MacDonald for their significant contribution to the program.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you goJoshua 1: 9 (The Bible)

Christmas Carols

Thank you to the many families who attended the recent and inaugural ELC Christmas Carols Concert. Thank you also for bringing food to share and wearing such festive colours!

Nativity Assembly

Last week the Year 2/3 class coordinated the final College assembly for 2015, with a special nativity focus. The College choir supported the carols and some of the staff assisted with instrumental support.

A very big thank you to Mrs Pamela Ellis, Mrs Rebekah Lane and Miss Lauren Shaw for coordinating the occasion.
