Niagara Region’s first ever ‘Paint-a-Snowplow’ contest a success

November 8, 2023

This fall Niagara Region extended an opportunity to select schools to participate in its first ever 'Paint-a-Snowplow' contest. In late October the Region delivered a snowplow to each participating school and students had two weeks to turn their plow into a work of art, expressing their creativity and school spirit through their designs.

On Friday, Nov. 3 invited guest judges, which included regional and local municipal councillors, visited each participating school to evaluate the entries. After careful consideration St. Michael’s Catholic Elementary School in Niagara-on-the-Lake was declared the winning entry of Niagara Region’s 2023 ‘Paint-a-Snowplow’ contest.

The painted plows will be used throughout the winter season and the winners of the contest will have the opportunity to name the plow truck for the season as well as and have their plow be part of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Christmas Parade.

As this was Niagara Region’s first year piloting the 'Paint-a-Snowplow' program a limited number of schools in one municipality were selected to test out the logistics on a small scale. Based on the successful results from this year, the Region will be looking at the potential of extending opportunities to enter the contest throughout Niagara in future years.

“The ‘Paint-a-Snowplow’ contest is a fun and engaging way of connecting our local communities the core services Niagara Region provides. The participating schools brought their skills to the task and the judges were very impressed with the high level of passion, artistry and school and community pride demonstrated by the students. Congratulations to the winners, St. Michael’s Catholic Elementary School, and thanks you to the other participating schools for their work and effort. I look forward to seeing these unique plows in our community throughout the winter.”

Gary Zalepa, Lord Mayor, Niagara-on-the-Lake

“Niagara Region's transportation services division is thrilled with the success of our first ‘Paint-a-Snowplow’ contest. Being able to foster awareness of the services we provide to the community in this direct and unique way was very special. I’d like to thank the schools, teachers and students that participated and made our first effort at the 'Paint-a-Snowplow' contest a success. Although we ran a limited contest this year as a pilot, based on feedback, we will definitely be looking at the potential of expanding this well received program throughout Niagara.”

Frank Tassone, Director Transportation Services
