Philanthropic Foundations Canada (PFC) has made a strategic shift to play a larger role in engaging governments, civil society partners, and influencers to support Canadian philanthropy – in all of its diversity -- to contribute to a just and sustainable world. To that end, the Director of Policy and Communications is responsible for aligning and amplifying PFC efforts in advocacy and communications based on insights from our research and programs. Read More CMU Grad Student Launches Data Platform to “Dig Deeper” Into Why Systems are Failing Black Residents in Pittsburgh Carnegie Mellon University student Alex Jackson has learned that the same data science methods she used for her research could also be used to collect data about people for social good. The data hub that she is leading aims to use data to tackle problems in Pittsburgh disproportionately affecting BIPOC. Read More Study: Nonprofits Led by People of Colour Face Growing Challenges Based on a survey of 433 nonprofit leaders of colour and a follow-up report, this article references that although 79 percent of POC-led organizations were responding to needs in communities directly impacted by COVID-19, 38 percent of all respondents have seen a decline in their grant funding as a result of the pandemic. Given these findings, POC-led organizations are calling for support and partnerships to push for long-term structural changes. Read More The COVID-19 Crisis Presents an Opportunity for Canada’s Charitable Sector to Disrupt the Status Quo “Sector leaders, as well as those delivering front line services, see the need for big changes ahead.” This article amplifies the need for improved data collection and space for more collaboration to seek fundamental change in the sector. It also features Philanthropic Foundations Canada, the Mirella and Lino Saputo Foundation, and Ashoka Canada’s working group whose mission is to examine the role of philanthropists as allies for systemic change. Read More Citing Legal Challenges, Environmental Group Says No to Alberta Public Inquiry This article overviews MakeWay’s decline to participate in Alberta’s public inquiry into foreign funding of Canadian environmental campaigns. The commission’s website indicates that COVID-19 has once again delayed Steve Allan’s final report as they are expecting an extension from the Minister of Energy. Ecojustice has also filed a legal challenge against the inquiry last fall with a court date that’s also been postponed due to the pandemic. Read More Calls for Shifts in Philanthropy Towards Refugees Leadership This Forbes article suggests that “refugee-led organizations and initiatives have largely been sidelined by traditional philanthropy” as they are receiving less than 1 percent of available humanitarian funding. As a response, the #RefugeesLead campaign seeks to demonstrate that it is possible and essential to increase direct support for local efforts of refugee-led organizations. Read More COVID, Cameras + Data Collection: Tracking the Tech that Tracks Us This commentary looks at various tech solutions that governments and organizations around the world have adopted to mitigate the spread and inform citizens on COVID-19. It points out that some of these tools are “enterprise-driven or experimental and have not yet been integrated into policy and practice,” and so offers this resource as evidence of heightening surveillance that’s being used by various jurisdictions and contexts. Read More Charitable Giving Increased 7.5 Percent in First Half of 2020 This article overviews increased charitable giving practices but raises attention to fundraisers that should be cautious about managing their expenditures given the potential of a recession and decreased government contracts and funds. Once again, there is a call for long-term support for charities to build stronger relationships. Read More States of Fragility 2020 This report presents a policy agenda by examining the global state of fragility that existed before COVID-19 and its impact on the 2030 Agenda. It also seeks to propose ideas on human capital analysis and calls for peacebuilders, diplomats, and security actors to develop more resilient strategies on conflict prevention and adapting their policies.
