SOCIAL DANCING AT WNH

Newcomer Taster Class (8:15-9:15 pm)

All levels are welcome; no dance experience is necessary!
Jump-start into partnered dancing and enjoy entry to the social dance afterward to practice your new skills and meet new friends.

Fast Room (9:30-10:30 pm)

This week, WNH will dedicate a room to all things “fast swing.” This could mean uptempo Lindy Hop, or dancing other swing dances such as Balboa or Collegiate Shag that evolved with faster music in mind. If you’ve ever been curious about any of these dances, this is your chance to see (and dance) them first hand.

May Progressive Series (4 weeks)

Check out the descriptions below for this month's class series. You can register for drop-in classes on first and second classes of the series if you cannot attend the whole month.

Beginner FUNdamentals
Come learn Lindy Hop! You'll build the dance from the basics while learning some of the history of this Black American art form. Our progressive classes are designed to get you social dancing and having a blast at our weekly dance parties in no time. Two-left-feet friendly, no partner required, just bring comfy shoes and your enthusiasm! This month will be focused on learning the 6-count rhythm of Lindy Hop.

PRE-REQUISITES
Series first week:
None. Two-left-feet friendly, no partner required; just bring comfy shoes and your enthusiasm!
Other weeks: You will be expected to build on material learned the previous weeks.

FORMAT: There are four months of distinct curriculum mixing 6ct, 8ct, and Charleston.

  • 6-count Lindy Hop
  • 6- and 8-count Lindy Hop
  • 8-count Lindy Hop
  • 8-count Lindy hop & Charleston

Teachers: Ali Wilkenning & Ben Doughty

Core Concepts | Classic Lindy Hop Moves
In honor of World Lindy Hop Day and Frankie Manning's birthday, this month we focus on classic variations that you will see on the dance floor and in old films of Lindy Hop. The late Frankie Manning is known as the Ambassador of Lindy Hop, and we are excited to work with you on some of his favorite patterns as well as common rhythms you will encounter on the dance floor. As always, our class will touch on quality of movement concepts.

PRE-REQUISITES: 4 months of Beginner FUNdamentals or comfort with 6-count Lindy Hop, 8-count Lindy Hop, and Charleston. No partner necessary.

Teachers: Calvin Lu & Gaurab Banerjee

Adventure | Musical Variations in Bal-Swing
Do you want to express more musicality on the social dance floor? Whether you have been dancing for years or just a few months, join us to learn fun shapes, rhythms, and textures in balboa. In this class, we'll show less common vocabulary, play with timing changes, and introduce shapes for both follows and leads.

PRE-REQUISITES: This is *not* a beginner class.
Minimum prerequisites are social dancing comfort with the following:
- Downhold/uphold basics, paddles, and come-arounds
- Lollies
- Out and ins

Teacher: Juanita Dickhaus & Minh Hoang

Deep Dive | Dance Texture
(me & music)

Just like how a swing song can sound totally different when played by a trumpet vs a piano, or played powerful and choppy vs soft and lilting, our dancing can embody a variety of different textures and qualities, even when we're doing the exact same steps. In this class, we'll explore different ways to interpret and embody music, and some of the techniques used to help us control our quality of movement.

PRE-REQUISITES: 6 months of Journey, Level 2, or Intermediate/Advanced Level classes (or equivalent)

Teachers: Calvin Lu & Steven Bach
