As part of the continuation of our ongoing efforts to further strengthen our strategy for te reo Māori, we are in the beginning stages of reshaping our internal te reo Māori strategy as well as the current requirements for the Māori language plans provided to us by applicants. We look forward to engaging and collaborating with the sector at a later time to discuss this.

Te Puna Kairangi - Premium Fund Interim Production Funding Round

An extra opportunity for funding for the screen industry, supported by the guilds has been announced by funding agencies Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC), Te Māngai Pāho and Irirangi te Motu (NZ On Air).

Intention:
The Interim Round intends to distribute money quickly to stimulate the domestic screen industry to recover from COVID-19 and generate employment. It is for projects that can clearly demonstrate ‘production readiness’ while maintaining the overall purpose of the Fund which is to ‘deliver high-quality New Zealand stories for international audiences’.

How much funding is available?:
Around $8.4 million dollars has been returned to the Fund from Round 1 as underspend and will now be made available through the interim production funding round for Te Puna Kairangi -The Premium Fund. The precise amount to be funded will be determined by the Panel (comprised of two Board Members from each Agency and an independent Chair) based on the needs of the projects recommended to them by the CEOs of the three Agencies.

  Project Spotlight:
Louis Baker 'Te Utu o Te Aroha'

'Te Utu o Te Aroha' released today is the latest song by Louis Baker and his first song including te reo Māori.

We caught up with Louis who told us about creating this waiata in an old '60s bach at Waimarama, "the song audibly depicts what it looked like that day. When I hear it, I just think about the crystal blue waters, golden sand and the waves rolling in."

"I would love to acknowledge Hana Mereraiha who brought a lot of depth and understanding and explained things for me. Her whole contribution is massive. Sickdrumz who produced a killer beat, and of course Reuben Fleetwood who was a great energy in the room. Everybody contributed. This session had this beautiful forward motion to it. Sir Tīmoti Kāretu came through and he liked it and that was special."
