Summer Cruising in October!
|
|
|
Sequoia cruisers enjoyed a real 'Indian Summer' weekend in Tiburon at the San Francisco Yacht Club.
We had 14 boats and nearly 50 people. We enjoyed a delightful weekend in 80 degrees once we got to Tiburon. A little mist on the way there and light winds in both directions but that is October in the Bay.
San Francisco YC hospitality, bon viveur and 'fun' were enjoyed by all.
A few boats arrived Friday but most on Saturday and we had plenty of space for all. Not an easy feat with 14 boats! The evening was very special with cocktails and a guest speaker in the Commodore's room followed by an excellent dinner.
Our guest speaker was Molly O'Bryan Vandemoer. Molly is an Olympian who competed in the recent Summer Olympics in London. She returned from there and now leads PYSF sailing. Her passion and talent were clear. She is a very good speaker and everyone really enjoyed the experience - a big hit.
Dinner in the dining room was great - we all enjoyed a special Coq au Vin meal but most importantly, just good camaraderie and repartee which continued late into the evening.
Breakfast on the deck in shirt sleeves while enjoying the sun was special for October!
It was especially good to see many newcomers at the cruising event - Peter Weigt and Anja Bog in Head Rush, the Eberle's in Bella plus PK and Alexandra and family in their new Oceanis 45 - Festina Lente.
Thanks to everyone for a fun weekend!
Peter - your Commodore

South Bay Championship - October 19th
As a finale to the great 2013 racing season at Sequoia, join us for the South Bay Championship on Saturday, October 19. This event will include boats from neighboring yacht clubs with two races for spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions (3 boats required to form a division) with a trophy going to the winner of each.
The Sailing Instructions have been posted on the Club website.
Then, after all the racing is complete, all skippers and crew are invited to come back to the club for the Racer's Ribs Dinner. The dinner will be followed by the presentation of the 2013 season race awards. So be sure not to miss this event. Anyone who has participated in a Sequoia Race in 2013, whether it be the Beer Can Series, any of our Saturday/Sunday race series, or any of the special one-day (or night) regattas should plan on attending to properly close out our 2013 season.

Racer’s Ribs - October 19th
Please come join us next Saturday, October 19, 2013 for the Racers’ Ribs Dinner. It is the long anticipated celebration and awards ceremony for the 2013 racing season. All club members are welcome and we especially want to see you there if you have been a skipper, crew, beer-can participant, or have a tale to tell about racing this year.
We will welcome you with an excellent dinner and an awards ceremony worthy of our hard fought year. It will go something like this: Names will be named and winners and crews will strut forth. We will question them as to their exploits. Stories of tactical triumph and mastery of the elements of wind and tide will follow. Eyes will roll heavenward with incredulity. Awards will be awarded and egos will swell to nearly insufferable status. We have much to celebrate.
As for dinner, I have to clarify; no actual racers will be harmed in its preparation. The ribs will be from the farm animals that usually provide them. We will enjoy said ribs with baked beans, potato salad, macaroni salad, and a green salad with tomatoes and cucumbers. There will also be a vegetarian lasagna offering. Dessert will be a delicious surprise.
The evening will begin with cocktails at 1800. Cost is $16.00 for adults and $8.00 for children.

Junior Keelboat Classes and a Good Neighbor
Many of the more experienced Junior Sailing students have grown through the junior and laser classes, and are looking to further develop their sailing skills. For some, PYSF is a good solution; however, not all students have the time or interest in joining a group with such a strong racing emphasis, being more "cruisers" than "racers". To meet this need, Fred Gillam has been developing an introductory keelboat class for older teen sailors, which he is piloting this fall. Two of the most experienced junior sailors, Kirsten Gillam and Natasha Morgan-Witts, volunteered to take a break from their JSP teaching duties to act as "guinea pigs" for this class.
Unfortunately, engine problems have delayed the past two sessions, and made them less constructive than was hoped - although providing an opportunity to discuss what to do if your engine fails! It was therefore very generous of Ian Turner, Marina manager of Bair Island, to offer a loan of his outboard to support these lessons, while the SYC outboard is being repaired. Fred and Paul took the engine out for a test on Saturday, and it worked very well; so keelboat lessons can resume this weekend!
