KG1Kindergarten 1 children have had a wonderful start to a new educational experience! The children have been very courageous, as have the parents, embarking on their many school years ahead. They have already begun to make friends in their own class, as well as meet children from the other kindergarten classes. Our main focus for the first part of the term, at least, is to help the children feel safe and secure in their new environment and to successfully interact with their peers and Teachers. The children have been enjoying the various learning areas and have had 2 marvellous music lessons with Miss Wong, which will continue each Wednesday. We've been learning about 'myself and my family'. Ros Grieves. Teacher KG2What a fantastic start to Kindergarten we have had. All the children have settled so well into their new environment and routines. We have enjoyed listening to lots of stories and engaged in play experiences including playdough, sand play, home corner and many more! Outside the children have enjoyed playing with the water, riding bikes and using the sandpit and mud kitchen. It has been wonderful to see the children acting with increasing autonomy and resilience, making new friends and interacting with their teachers. We are looking forward to a busy term ahead. Courtney Stein. Teacher KG3It has been a wonderful start to the year. Kindergarten 3 have settled well in to their new routines. New friendships have formed and a passion for learning ignited. On our first day students discussed the value of making “good choices”. We explored all the new learning spaces and how to interact within them. This term we are unpacking, "What Makes me Unique?", discussing our favourite food, our families and other things that interest us. We look forward to a fun filled journey ahead as we get to know each other, our teachers and friends. Margaret Gokavi. Teacher PP1Pre-primary 1 have had a great start to the year; everyone is already making new friends and learning new things. We have loved playing with water activities outside in the beautiful warm weather and joining in play with all the pre-primaries. We have commenced our first maths topic of Number; we are enjoying lots of counting and ordering of numbers. Our broader class topic this term is Fairytale Families. We have started with our first book, Goldilocks and The Three Bears. We are loving the bears' house in our dramatic play area, using wonderful language and retelling the stories in amazing detail with our friends. Don’t be surprised if we are coming home tired, we have been having too much fun working hard! Mel Baker. Teacher PP2There is so much to learn in the first weeks of Pre- Primary! The children have been busy getting to know each other and learning new classroom routines. Our literacy focus this term is Fairytale Families and we have been exploring the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. Just like the three bears, the children love porridge. Making their own yummy porridge, the children carefully measured and mixed, then documented the procedure with drawings. Creating visual artwork with paint is a relaxing and enjoyable experience for the Pre-primary children. Their very first Pre-primary paintings are already displayed in the classroom. As part of the process of finding out about themselves and their friends, the children have collaged their names and created self portraits. Building with blocks and shaving cream provided some good clean fun! Jo Coffey. Teacher PP3What a fantastic start to Pre-Primary! The children have settled so well into the class and have quickly learnt the daily routines! We have been playing and sharing with our friends making zoos and bey-blades out of various construction toys! In literacy and HASS we have been learning about our families and ourselves and have painted our portraits by examining ourselves in the mirror. In English we have started focusing on letters and sounds. This week we have taught the letters 'S', 'A', 'T' and the sounds they make. As a class we brainstormed all the words we could think of that started with our focus letters, the lists were very long!! We also began our Fairytales topic by reading, acting out and sequencing the story 'Little Red Riding Hood'. It has been a fantastic and fun start to Pre-primary and we are very excited to keep learning and exploring! Hayley Beath. Teacher 1.1Wow! What a great start we have had to Year 1! We have settled in and we’re all enjoying our new classroom and learning exciting ‘big school’ routines. In Mathematics, we are learning about 2D shapes. We have played some games called “shape bingo”, “the shape game”, and “I have, who has?” We’ve also used stencils to draw pictures and create shape collages. Last week, we made shapes with our bodies. It was pretty tricky, but we really enjoyed it. Can you work out what shapes we are making in the photos? We have been learning that shapes can be rotated and they are still the same shape! It tricked us when we thought that a rotated square was a diamond, but it’s actually still a square! We look forward to sharing more of our learning on Seesaw. Lauren Shaw. Teacher 1.2Year 1.2 has been busy settling into new routines and eagerly learning new topics! Our Investigations topic at the moment is Australian Animals. Investigation time combines the subjects of Science, Design and Technology, History and Geography. We have learnt about native Australian animals, and how other animals that aren’t native made it to Australia. We are discovering that animals have certain needs that have to be met to survive. There are six needs, see if I can remember... In Visual Art, we are learning about the primary colours and how these colours can be used to make other colours. Everyone enjoyed seeing what happened when they mixed two primary colours together – there was lots of excited clapping during art! Vanessa Jongeling. Teacher 2.1It has been a great start to the school year! The students have come prepared with books covered and ready to learn. Thank you, parents! Currently in Year 2 Science, we have been investigating what happens to rain falling on different surfaces and extracting the rainfall stored under the ground. As part of our investigations we had to predict what would happen to rain falling on different surfaces. We tested pavers, bitumen, fake and real grass, woodchips and sand. Our ground water investigation involved using a syringe to extract the water trapped in-between a cup of gravel. We recorded our observations in our science journals, which included labelled diagrams. In Geography, we have been learning the continents and the oceans of the world. We have enjoyed viewing a variety of YouTube videos and the continent song has been quite popular! The students have labelled a map of the world and will use their maps to pose geographical questions about familiar and unfamiliar places. Tracey Jenkins. Teacher 2.2Year 2.2 started the year with a lot of excitement in our new room, as we welcomed two new members to our class! We began our mathematical journey by exploring numbers and place value. The colourful marbles, straws, counters and stickers were wonderful to work with as we explored the different ways to represent numbers. Learning about place value was made even more fun with MAB blocks. This term in Science, Year 2.2 are learning all about ‘WATER’. We started the amazing topic by investigating ‘Where does water come from?’ We also explored the water cycle process and all enjoyed acting out the different stages. We are all very eager and excited to do more interesting experiments with water in the coming weeks! Min Chi. Teacher 3.1Year 3.1 have literally hit the ground running over the first two weeks with new grass and soccer goals on the oval, access to the upstairs recreation deck and new fitness sessions. We are also very excited about being in an upstairs classroom, using flexible seating, having a diary and our own class set of iPads. In Mathematics we have measured our heights, recorded the data and graphed the results. We have also explored our mental maths strategies books and extension cards. With the introduction of our new spelling program, Words Their Way, we have been learning the process of a word sort and revising short and long vowel sounds with our phonics phones. In Year 3, students continue to develop research and recording skills in several Learning Areas, one of which is HASS. We have looked at several different sources to answer our broad question about Chinese New Year. The next step is to use our notes to write our own information text. We have also explored our tubs of Lego to help inform our upcoming design project to build a space station. So we’re looking forward to some exciting weeks coming up! Deanne Johnston. Teacher 4.1In Year 4 there is a lot of growth taking place! We planted some bean seeds and have been giving them just what they need in order to grow - sunlight, water and then nutrient rich soil. We have been amazed at how our seeds have germinated and have discussed how the beans are so similar to our growth - both physical and academic growth. We are all at different stages of development and just need to right environment in which to flourish. Wendy Innes. Teacher - planting bean seeds - 5.1We have had a great start to Year 5! 6.1The Year Six class started the year writing positive things about each other; then students drew self-portraits of themselves and wrote those positive things next to their portrait. In Mathematics we have been learning about the different types of graphs and analysing data. The students were given gummy bears and they had to draw different graphs based on the colours of gummy bears found in their packet. They are learning about primary and secondary data and have been looking through newspapers and online to find different graphs that are used to present information. We have made a great start to this year and we will be learning lots of exciting things in Year Six. The students will be continuing to participate in the River Rangers program and this term we will be walking to the Swan River and going to Cottesloe to see the Sculptures By The Sea. Janice Lotsos. Teacher Digital Technologies Students have begun the new year with a new temporary venue for the Digital Technologies lab, in the assembly room. The transition has been made all the more exciting with the arrival of Apple Macbook Pros. Everyone has had fun learning about the differences between the different types of computer and their applications. Jay Saxton. Teacher LANGUAGES The students have started off the year well with lots of emphasis on greetings. We are about to get into some fun topics such as: Yr 1- family, Yr 2 - The Hungry Caterpillar, Yr 3- Australian/Italian Native animals, Yr 4 and Yr 5 Carnevale and Yr 6 Fashion and Clothing. Mirella Kerrigan. Teacher SPORT Students have enjoyed an exciting start to the school year with the hockey program on Monday mornings and running club on Fridays. Great attendance at both clubs and enthusiasm shown by the students. Keep up the fantastic effort! Lauren French. Teacher MUSICWhen your favourite song by Queen is playing on the radio, your senses begin to heighten. Your fingers start to tap, your feet start to move, your mouth begins to sing/mumble/howl ALL the words, drum rolls, cymbal crashes involuntarily... These not-so-subtle reactions may not be as innocent as you think. Most of the times, you might have sung a rhythm or a pentatonic scale without you realising it! In our music classes, we are utilising all our senses to experience every beat, rhythm and melody we’ve heard. From Kindergarten to Year 1, we are learning how to listen, and recognise different musical changes, and quickly act on them with a movement. For example – when they hear a tune being played from a low pitch to a higher pitch, students will have to react to them by expanding their bodies. Joey Wong.
