Did you dance, did you party at the best night in town? Yes Sequoia celebrated the 50's, 60's, 70's moments this Saturday and it was a blast! A memorable decade dance!

Kathy Harris had the passion and motivation to put on this fun party and we had a great turn out. The band kept the party going well into the latel hours and we twisted, we jived, we rocked - all the generations. The band was great, the food was good, the company was spectacular and the atmosphere was fantastic.

A special thanks to Kathy and all her supporters and volunteers, including Rear Commodore Dan Lockwood, Clinton Ward, Jackie Ward, Lina Reynolds, Deb Blackmore, Cindy Herr, Jeanie Treichel, Helen Horn, Patricia Cocoran Jim and Carolyn Peterson, Carole Bumpus and Vice Commodore Winston Bumpus.

And this is only the beginning of a great September sailing and social scene

General Meeting, South of France and DID this Friday

Ahoy Sequoia

There are two very special reasons to celebrate on Friday this week in addition to our monthly General Meeting.

Robin and Kathryn Weber are setting sail. Yes - that's right. They go out of the Golden Gate the following week and turn left to Mexico and from there to Hawaii and beyond  - on a personal adventure they have been planning for some time. Many of us dream about it, we all think about it - well they are actually doing it!! It would be marvelous to have as many of you as can make it Friday evening to wish them Bon Voyage.

The second fun reason to come is we wanted to celebrate the France mega cruise with the ultimate photo op. Robin Weber has compiled a short but spectacular celebration of our memorable cruise out. This is another must see and be there moment! A previous Commodore reminded me that no cruise out is ever complete without the photo celebration. Well this is it!

So - we have a truly fantastic evening coming up. Just to motivate you even further you can join us for a marvelous number of first and second readings. The club is on its way to a record recruitment year by any standards.......

We will also have a solemn moment to give eight-bells for our member and dear friend, Dick Trainer, who passed away last month.

I look forward to seeing you Friday the 13th this week. TGIF libations from 17:30, dinner at 18:30- fun continues at 19:30. And let's not forget the mighty conch. We shall have a lot to sound out about at the end of this evening!

Sequoia rocks!

Barth Memorial Race Saturday, September 21

The Barth Memorial Race an annual team competition promoting the on-going friendly rivalry between Sequoia and Coyote Point Yacht Clubs will be held on Saturday, September 21.

With spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions, this is a club competition with the winning club taking home the Barth Perpetual Trophy. The race is scored by combining the results from the spinnaker and non-spinnaker divisions for each club. The club with the lowest combined total score will be the winner.

All skippers should attend the skipper's meeting at 9:30 on the day of the race. The start line is near marker S and the start time is 12:00 and finishes at the Coyote Point Marina breakwater.

The race will be followed by a cruise-in at the Coyote Yacht Club. BBQ hamburgers with fixings will be available after the race ($16.00). All Sequoia Yacht Club racers are invited to Coyote Point Yacht Club after the race to hear the race results and take part in the BBQ.

Come on out to help Sequoia keep the trophy.

Coastal Cleanup Day - September 21, 2013

Coastal Cleanup Day is a great event for your entire family... in fact, for everyone! Invite your friends to join you in helping to keep our creeks, rivers, lakes, coast, and ocean clean, healthy, and safe for all of us.

On Saturday, September 21st from 9am-Noon, cleanups will take place at the Sequoia Yacht Club and more than 800 other locations throughout California.

Help us reduce waste at the Cleanup; Bring your own reusable cleanup supplies from home, like a bucket or reusable bag and work gloves, and we can cut down on the disposable items that we use at the cleanup! We will have additional buckets, bags and t-shirts.

Thanks for all you do to protect California's coastal resources. We look forward to seeing you on California Coastal Cleanup Day!

San Francisco YC Cruise Out - October 12/13

Ahoy Sequoia

It time to sign in for the San Francisco YC cruise out - always one of our most popular destinations.

We selected October 11/12/13 for this years adventure and it will be a great weekend!

If people would like to sail up on Friday 11th we shall absolutely accomodate that but we are expecting most on Saturday 12th. I shall be there early to welcome you all. We would depart Sunday about midday but there is no rush - sailing in the North Bay gets really good!

As well as docktails at about 4.30pm we have organised cocktails in the Commodores room before the dinner on Saturday 12th at 5.30pm. I plan to have a guest to speak to us and will keep that a surprise.

Dinner is at 7.30 in the main dining room. The menu is as follows:

Caeser Salad

Chicken Coq au Vin with pancetta bacon, mushrooms and pearl onions, served with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. We can also order a vegetarian as needed.

Dessert is Chocolate Decadence

Coffee / Tea included

The costs is $40 a head for dinner plus wines which you would order separately. I am assuming all cruisers and guests will join us for dinner. The mooring fees are as last time - a dollar a foot.

Breakfast is also available in the club - just let me know if you want that organized or will make your own arrangements.

What I would appreciate from all interested is your boat name and the dimensions plus number of guests. Black Toppers are very welcome. This is a very popular cruise out, so please let me know quickly so we do not disappoint anyone.

I look forward to hosting a great cruise out for all of you!

New Members - New Responsibilities

We have had nearly 30 new members this year (wow) with many first and second readings scheduled for this Friday night. The Board established a document earlier this year outlining the responsibilities of sponsors to new members. With so many new members the Board felt it was a good time to send this out to members to remind all of the sponsors of their responsibilities.

Responsibilities of Sponsorship of Candidate(s) for Membership at SYC:

1. Know the candidate(s) you are sponsoring.
2. If the candidate becomes a member
a. Actively maintain contact with the candidate(s) for their first year as a member of the club -- be sure to invite them to races, cruise-outs, events, etc.
b. If they become a member, communicate with the person about what's going well for them and what could be improved at the club.
c. Encourage them to get involved in something at the club -- racing, cruise-outs, other events, etc.

Roles of Sponsorship of Candidate(s) for Membership at SYC:

1. Welcome the candidate(s) to the club while they are guests – get them signed in as visitors, get them drinks, get them situated for dinner, etc.
2. Introduce the candidate(s) to club members and include them in your conversations
3. Introduce the candidate(s) to the Membership Chairperson who will conduct an interview and introduce them for their first and second readings, including who the sponsors are and how they know them, and the areas of interest they have indicated on the application

Roles/Responsibilities of Membership Committee:

1. A Membership Committee, consisting of at least 4 members, will be available to assist the Membership Chair with candidate vetting.
2. If the Membership Chair receives an application from a candidate with less than 2 sponsors, the Membership Chair will request 2 member of the Membership Committee or Senior Members interview/get to know the candidate.
3. If a member of the Membership Committee or Senior Member agrees to sponsor a candidate, the above roles/responsibilities apply to their sponsorship.

The following sentence is part of the club's Bylaws.

The Membership Chairperson shall conduct an investigation to determine the suitability of the nominee for membership, and shall report its findings at the next meeting of the Board of Directors following the first reading of the nomination.

The “report” referred to includes the following.
1. Who are the sponsors, how do the sponsors know the candidate(s), and how long have the sponsors known the candidate(s)
2. The areas of interest the candidate(s) have indicated on their application
3. The recommendation of the Membership Chairperson as to whether or not invite the candidate(s) for a second reading, along with the Membership Chairperson's reasons for the recommendation

If you have any questions regarding sponsorship please see Jerry Jones Membership Committe Chair.

Raid on California boater fund; immediate action needed!

We need your help today! The California State Legislature is about to take boating tax dollars and use them for non-boating purposes. Please act now to ask your state representatives to protect boater tax dollars and vote “No” on Senate Bill 436.

SB 436 would open up the boater-financed state Harbors and Watercraft Revolving Fund (HWRF) for a non-boating purpose, specifically the prevention of damage to streets and property within cities caused by beach erosion and flooding. It also directs $1,000,000 for streets and property located along Hueneme Beach. While the prevention of such damage is important, boats are not the source of the damage and using boating dollars to support non-boating programs is a dangerous precedent.

Boat registration fees, fuel taxes and other proceeds from recreational boating activities fund the HWRF, which helps pay for docks, vessel sewage pumpouts and boat ramps throughout the state. Many of these state dollars are matched by federal funds, making these dedicated boater taxes that much more valuable. We must protect the integrity and effectiveness of the HWRF.

You can easily contact your state Senators and Assemble Representatives using the BoatU.S. email system by clicking here.

Ask them to protect boater tax dollars and vote “NO” on SB 436.
