UN circular economy course a springboard for action across Victoria 

MWRRG’s circular economy leadership course, run in partnership with the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) should be used as a springboard for action across Victoria, advised key speakers. 

Over the past six weeks delegates learned from circular economy trailblazers, United Nations representatives and leaders from business, social enterprise and local and state government.  

Their expertise allowed delegates to build their knowledge and leadership capability to become agents of change in Victoria’s transition to a circular economy.

Network encouraged to procure recycled products made from waste tyres to support circular economy 

The Transfer Station Network recently met with Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) to discuss the ongoing challenges in the waste tyre supply chain and how councils can improve their procurement of waste tyre collection services and recycled waste tyres.

    Make your event more environmentally friendly 

    Grampians Central West Waste and Resource Recovery Group has developed a Sustainable Regional Events Guide to help councils hold more sustainable events. You will find content to help with waste contamination or ‘tricky waste’, food and drink waste tips, advice on marketing in a sustainable way and tips for using more sustainable decorations. 

    Premier’s Sustainability Awards now open 

    The prestigious awards are on again and councils, business groups and community organisations with an innovative idea or project that contributes to a sustainable future in reducing waste may be eligible to enter. Read more to enter one of six award categories.

    Waste Warrior – Rowan Miller, Senior Waste Officer at City of Monash 

    Passionate people make the world of waste go around. Each month, we profile a Waste Warrior – someone whose dedication to minimising waste and maximising resource recovery is helping make Melbourne a more sustainable and liveable place. 

    This month, we feature Rowan Miller, Senior Waste Officer at City of Monash, who fell into the waste sector by accident. Starting his career at Serco in beach cleansing eventually led to a supervisory role at the City of Monash in the waste department.

    Council spotlight

    Casey tracks ‘green’ spending to assist the transition to a circular economy

    The City of Casey Sustainable Purchasing Report 2020-2021 tracks councils ‘green’ spending credentials to ensure that expenditure is focused on products and services that it classifies as a ‘sustainable purchase’ and that promotes a circular economy. 

    This was the first year of tracking and recording green spend figures independently, with results showing that 8% of council’s expenditure was on sustainable products and services.

    Weird and wonderful waste news

    While Styrofoam may be a well known brand, it is difficult to recycle and usually ends up in landfill. Cue a new bioplastic version of polystyrene foam that is made from mealworms and exoskeleton, which breaks down in the soil in a couple of weeks.

    A Food Waste Recycling for business guide

    The Food waste recycling for business guide is a useful tool that aims to reduce food waste ending up in landfill, and helps cafes, restaurants, bakeries, pubs and all food businesses cut costs associated with food waste and food waste disposal. The guide includes advice on how to conduct a food waste assessment and how to introduce a food waste recycling system in daily business operations. 

     

    The Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Implementation Plan sets out four strategic objectives which underpin all of MWRRG’s activities:

    Reduce waste sent to landfill

    Deliver community environmental & economic benefits

    Increase organic waste recovered

    Plan for Melbourne’s growing population
