Over the past six weeks delegates learned from circular economy trailblazers, United Nations representatives and leaders from business, social enterprise and local and state government. Their expertise allowed delegates to build their knowledge and leadership capability to become agents of change in Victoria’s transition to a circular economy.

Each month, we profile a Waste Warrior – someone whose dedication to minimising waste and maximising resource recovery is helping make Melbourne a more sustainable and liveable place. This month, we feature Rowan Miller, Senior Waste Officer at City of Monash, who fell into the waste sector by accident. Starting his career at Serco in beach cleansing eventually led to a supervisory role at the City of Monash in the waste department. Council spotlightCasey tracks ‘green’ spending to assist the transition to a circular economy The City of Casey Sustainable Purchasing Report 2020-2021 tracks councils ‘green’ spending credentials to ensure that expenditure is focused on products and services that it classifies as a ‘sustainable purchase’ and that promotes a circular economy. This was the first year of tracking and recording green spend figures independently, with results showing that 8% of council’s expenditure was on sustainable products and services. Weird and wonderful waste newsWhile Styrofoam may be a well known brand, it is difficult to recycle and usually ends up in landfill. Cue a new bioplastic version of polystyrene foam that is made from mealworms and exoskeleton, which breaks down in the soil in a couple of weeks. Resource of the monthA Food Waste Recycling for business guideThe Food waste recycling for business guide is a useful tool that aims to reduce food waste ending up in landfill, and helps cafes, restaurants, bakeries, pubs and all food businesses cut costs associated with food waste and food waste disposal. The guide includes advice on how to conduct a food waste assessment and how to introduce a food waste recycling system in daily business operations.
