Religious Liberty
"Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom…to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance" Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
January 16, less than a week ago, was International Religious Freedom Day, marking the anniversary of the 1786 Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom that became the basis for the freedom of religion clause in the 1st Amendment to the Constitution – "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…."
Here in the United States, the General Conference is waiting to learn whether the Supreme Court will hear a case with potentially far-reaching consequences for Sabbath-keepers in the workplace. The case began five years ago after an Adventist Church member was fired by Walgreens Pharmacy for failing to
conduct a two-hour training session on Sabbath.
Another important category of religious freedom cases relates to so-called blasphemy and apostasy laws enforced by more than 70 countries around the world. Such laws deny basic religious freedom rights and often are used to impose harsh penalties or even death sentences for causing “offense” to a particular faith or for trying to change one’s religion.
Maintenance of religious freedom remains an ongoing challenge, both in the developed countries of the West and in less developed countries. We encourage every church member to research the issues and actively support religious liberty
efforts.
Our annual Religious Liberty offering was received last Sabbath, but if you weren't ready for it then, there is still time to contribute to this vital cause either this Sabbath or next. You can use the tear-away envelopes that were included with the Religious Liberty flyers in the bulletins on the past two Sabbaths, or you can mark a tithe envelope to direct funds to that cause. Religious freedom is of crucial importance, not only to those of us here but also to all humanity.
