Interior Forest

Dear friend,

From drier forests with huge Douglas-firs and Ponderosa Pines to inland temperate rainforests with ancient cedars, Interior old-growth forests in British Columbia contain some of the rarest ecosystems in the world. Their destruction is a huge loss not only in terms of ecological values, but also irreplaceable cultural traditions and Indigenous knowledge.

Sadly, interior forests only receive a fraction of the attention their coastal counterparts obtain. We want to change that. Later this month, we’re sending a few members of our team, Jens Wieting, Flossie Baker and Mya Van Woudenberg, to visit Interior forests and connect with communities to ensure Sierra Club BC’s work to protect irreplaceable old-growth forests and change forest stewardship in ALL parts of the province.

We need your help to keep the pressure on the B.C. government to make good on its promise to preserve critical forests and support local leaders in finding solutions that protect and restore old forests, while creating vibrant and safe communities

Donate To Save Ancient Interior Forests

Remaining old-growth and other intact forests in the interior are an important natural carbon vault and provide vital habitat for endangered species like caribou. They also reduce devastating climate impacts like droughts, flooding and landslides and are more resilient to fire than young plantation forests. Last year’s intense wildfire season was a clear example of how climate change coupled with poorly managed forests can produce devastating effects on local communities. But destructive logging practices continue largely unchanged.

By visiting places like Lytton, Lillooet, Prince George and Cache Creek, the Sierra Club BC team will meet with local leaders, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, who share concerns about the intact forests that keep their communities safe.

Help send our team to the Interior!

Our team will gather visual and audio assets and document intact at-risk forests, as well as the damage caused by logging and climate impacts, helping to share just how rare and irreplaceable Interior old-growth forest ecosystems truly are.

We'll use photos, drone footage, videos, mapping and community-based stories to keep the pressure up on the B.C. government to implement all of the recommendations made by the Old-Growth Panel and work with Indigenous communities to deliver the promised change in forest stewardship practices that places ecosystem health before profit. We'll also engage with younger audiences around forest issues, sharing content gathered from the Interior across new social media platforms. And we need your help to do this.

Help us tell the story of ancient Interior old-growth forests!

$25 will help pay for one social media ad
$250 will help pay for aerial drone footage
$500 will cover gas to visit several communities and at-risk forests in the Interior
$1,000 will help pay for an edited video that can be used on multiple social media platforms
$2,000 will cover accommodations, food and other expenses over several days

Donate Now!

Any little bit helps in our work to help protect irreplaceable old-growth forests in B.C. If we reach our $5,000 goal by June 20th, the Flavelle Family Foundation will match all donations, so we can undertake more work supporting Interior communities and their local leaders. Don't miss this opportunity to double your impact!

For the forests,

P.S. If you’re able to do so, please, consider becoming a monthly donor, your ongoing monthly support will continue to make an impact across the province.
