Wednesday Lunch is Back!

After a long hiatus the Wednesday Lunch is back. Your new Commodore Winston Bumpus and his first mate Carole will be opening the kitchen again for Wednesday Lunch starting on December 4th.

It will be a great time for everyone to come down to the Club and have a nice lunch with your friends. It is also a great opportunity to maybe take the morning or afternoon to work from your boat, if you can, as we do have wifi.

There will be times when Carole and I will not be available, so if you are interested in occasionally stepping in to do a meal, let us know.

So, come on down starting Wednesday, December 4th and enjoy a home cooked meal.

Winston & Carole Bumpus

December at Sequoia!

Come welcome and celebrate the Holiday Season here at the Sequoia Yacht Club!

December 2:   Holiday Tree Decoration:   Come celebrate the season helping decorate the club and tree for the holidays.  The peace and reflection of tree trimming and decoration will be artfully juxtaposed with the willful violence of Monday Night Football!  Your spirit will soar with the yin and yang of life expressed through commercial breaks!  Please come join us!

December 13:  Friday the 13th, now there is a cheery Holiday moment!  But wait, we have General Meeting!  Okay that cancels out…  We hope you will join us.

December 15:  Children’s Holiday Party.   The children’s holiday party is a long tradition at Sequoia and all are welcome.  Sign up with your young guests and enjoy fellowship, the magical talents of Magic Mike and a visit with the Big Guy himself (Santa).

December 20:   Holiday DID:  Okay, one of my searing memories as a young member at Sequoia is that of watching a senior staff commodore bent over, grunting and apparently painfully releasing a football as a goose a layin’.  As an annual tradition, it is highly recommended!  Please join us for dinner and an unforgettable evening of piano playing and singing!

December 31:  New Years Eve:   Our Social Chair Kathy Harris has secured a top notch band for a classy evening of music, dancing and appetizers.  Champagne toasts at nine and twelve are sure to make this a memorable night out.

So get your shopping done and clear your calendar for a great month at your club.  See you there.

Encinal Yacht Cub Lighted Yacht Parade Cruise Out - December 7th & 8th

Come enjoy some holiday cheer at the Encinal Yacht Club and join us for the 37th Annual Lighted Yacht Parade.  The Lighted Yacht Parade is organized by the Encinal Yacht Club and the Oakland Yacht Club for Saturday, December 7 and takes place along the waterfront of the Oakland/Alameda Estuary. The parade begins just after sunset, around 5:30 pm.

Please bring munchies and cocktails to share for Docktails at 4:30 pm.  We will enjoy the parade followed by dinner at the Encinal Yacht Club.  Please let us know if you will have dinner.

Thank you to Shannon Amerman and Tod Klingler for taking over hosting the cruise out due to some ankle surgery.

Happy Thanksgiving,

John and Stacy Zolck

Boating Videos Worth Watching

First, the AUS-35, a sailing ship representing Australia in the 1995 Louis Vuitton Cup, suddenly sinks halfway through the race:

Second, fishing boats crossing the Columbia Bar. This one is long but you get the idea in the first 30 seconds. (Warning! There is some salty talk near the end of this video). The boats are returning from fishing off the coast of Washington and Oregon and are crossing the Columbia Bar, which is where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean - one of the most dangerous ports of entry anywhere in the world. There are at least eight deaths a year of people trying to get in or out.

These boats are self-righting, have a super low center of gravity, sealed engine compartments, basically bullet proof glass windows, double steel hulls. The Coast Guard has closed the port to any other boats due to waves of 35 to 45 feet:

Thanks to John Draeger and YBR crew for finding these.

Do you want to have a Blast?

After assembling the Blast and getting it out each week, it is time for me to hand this off to someone else. It has been a great way to get current information to our members and from the feedback I've received I think it has been a much appreciated media.

For the most part it is copying text from various emails and pasting them into the template. It is pretty easy.  The tool I use is called Campaign Monitor - You can check out a demo at www.campaignmonitor.com. I will be glad to train and be available for technical or editorial assistance.

Please contact me if you are interested and are willing to take the helm of the Blast for awhile.
