Composer Opportunities
NZ Composer Sessions 2017
Closing 4 July
SOUNZ is calling for orchestral scores from SOUNZ composers (max two/composer). The adjudication panel will recommend a selection of works that reflects the diversity of musical styles/voices in NZ composition, with a collective duration of up to 60 minutes. The 2017 recordings will take place in Wellington in February.
Screen Composers Workshop
SOUNZ collaborated with the Screen Composers Guild of New Zealand (SCGNZ) in a joint workshop held in Wellington in April.
Approaching the Market, delivered by composer Andrew Hagen, looked at the fundamentals of promoting and running a composing business. During his presentation, both experienced and up-and-coming composers were taken through a whole range of ways of marketing and promoting themselves to the music industry.
For those who missed it, a video of the workshop is now available on our website.
NZ jazz catalogue
In the past few years, SOUNZ has extended its collection policy to include New Zealand jazz. SOUNZ’s jazz cataloguing project started in 2013 with the help of composer and jazz pianist John Key.
The project aimed to enhance our jazz collection by registering composers and collecting their works. The work was funded by APRA AMCOS NZ and has lead to a broader and more comprehensive on-line archive providing a rich selection of quality jazz sheet music, now available on our website.
Browse here for works, which are available as a free download or $1 each.
New from Resound
In 2015, SOUNZ facilitated a project to record and promote NZ orchestral works suitable for school and community orchestras. You can now view the recordings of In The Lair Of The Cave Weta and Tango Mangle by Leonie Holmes
performed by the Westlake Symphony Orchestra, conducted by music director David Squire.
NZ Music for Woodwind, an annual concert curated by Ben Hoadley, had its eighth instalment in March this year. The concert featured works by Ken Wilson, John Elmsly, Douglas Lilburn, Natalie Hunt, Ben Hoadley and Jeremy Mayall.
Each year, the Resound Project delivers new high quality studio recordings of New Zealand works considered to be of artistic merit but for which broadcast-standard recordings do not exist. In 2014, Resound Studio Recordings
were made of works by
Peter Adams, Robert Burch, Helen Caskie, Ross Harris, Chloe Moon and Gary Wilby.
NZ youth celebrates NZ music
This year’s The Big Sing and NZCT Chamber Music Contest
District Rounds are currently taking place around the country. Read more about the contests here.
In addition, CMNZ presents Open Stage - a community partnership between CMNZ and SOUNZ. This pre-concert event offers NZCT Contest Award Winners the opportunity to perform as a ‘warm up act’ to Suyeon Kang and Stephen de Pledge concerts.
In addition to the youth events in NZ, young New Zealand musicians are taking our music abroad on various tours around the globe. At the end of June, the NZ Youth Choir heads to Europe for its 2016 European Landmark Tour and The Aotea Youth Symphony will travel to France in July to perform in Arras coinciding with the 100th anniversary commemorations of WWI.
