St John's School Newsletter Term 2 Week 1 St John's is a Child Safe School where all children are respected and are protected from harm. Principal's Message Dear Parents and Guardians, Welcome to Term 2! I hope everyone was able to enjoy a break with family and friends and getting ready for a busy Term 2. This term we have a Junior School Excursion, Canberra Camp, NAPLAN, the Principal Appointment process will begin, students participating in the Sacramental Program and Cross Country events – just to name a few! Junior School Excursion- The Hungry Caterpillar - This Friday 23rd April, Foundation to Year 2 students will be attending the Hungry Caterpillar Performance in Shepparton. There are a number of families that still need to give permission for their child to attend the event. Please log on to PAM to give permission and then to CDF pay to pay for the excursion. Please ensure that you have given permission and paid before Thursday afternoon so your child can attend this excursion. Stations of the Cross - On Easter Thursday and yesterday morning Year 6 students presented the Stations of the Cross. The Year 6 students, under the guidance of Mrs Frewen did an outstanding job respectfully and reverently presenting the Easter story. The whole school was captivated by their performance and it was a beautiful start to Easter. Kiss and Go/Bus stop - Over the holidays Seven Creek Excavations installed a Kiss and Go/Bus Stop on Bury St. The Kiss and Go area is not car parking space, it has a 3 minute limit for parents to simply drop off their children. Parents are encouraged to use the Kiss and Go rather than using Anderson St which can be very busy. Thank you to Rowan and Kristy Burton (parents of Quentin, Foundation) for building the bus stop and the Shire of Strathbogie for funding the project for us. New School Zone Signs - Over the holidays Vic Roads installed new 40km School Zone signs for us just near the traffic lights in Anderson St. These new signs will hopefully encourage and remind drivers to slow down during the designated school times. Year 2 Teacher Change Over - This week Rachel Timperley and Lucy Hamill will be working together to ensure a smooth transition in Year 2. This Friday will be Lucy’s last day with us before she begins Maternity Leave. We wish Lucy all the best for the remainder of her pregnancy and for safe arrival of her baby. Lucy, we will miss you! School Advisory Council (School Board) Meeting - The next School Advisory Meeting will be held at the Seven’s Creek Hotel in Harry’s Bar on 27th April at 6pm. Related correspondence will be emailed out to members later this week. Mothers Day Stall - Each year we hold a Mother's Day stall at school. This year it will be held on Tuesday the 4th of May. Your child can bring along $4.00 on the day and purchase a gift. Payment can also be made via CDF Pay for your convenience up until the 2nd of May. While they were saying all this, Jesus appeared to them and said, “Peace be with you”. They thought they were seeing a ghost and were scared half to death. He continued with them, “Don’t be upset, It is the Resurrection itself that opens us to greater hope, for it opens our life and the life of the world to the eternal future of God, to full happiness, to the certainty that evil, sin, and death may overcome. This leads to living daily situations with greater trust, to facing them with courage and determination. Christ’s resurrection illuminates these everyday situations with a new light. The Resurrection of Christ is our strength! (Pope Francis, General Audience, 3 April 2013) The risen Christ brings joy and wonder. When our church comes alive with modern-day music and community programs, the risen Christ is there. When our church reaches out to other local denominations and faith groups, the risen Christ is there. When our church searches out and uses the talent of its members, the risen Christ is there. Happy Birthday to the following students! Mia Holmes, Asha Embling, James Jackson & Emma Zhao PE News Cross country will be held on the second Friday back in Term 2. The year 3-6 will walk down to the Sevens Creek and run on the track and start at 12pm. The Prep to year 2 will run around our oval after lunch - we may shorten lunch to fit it in? We will need parent helpers for our park run. This would involve standing at a marker to ensure students are going the right way. Parents are also welcome to come and watch. The students have been improving their fitness with the Jump Rope for Heart Program. Any running practise the students can do would be fabulous. Running club will be on in the mornings. Gymnastics - St. John's has received another $3000 grant to run Gymnastics and orienteering, which is very exciting. Gymnastics will run inside the Mercy Centre from week 2 or 3 in PE lessons on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Just a few things about Gymnastics - we have a rule in PE - Never on your head! Students should never be doing head stands or anything where their head touches the ground. Even when doing somersaults our head doesn't touch. - you may see kids upside down a bit more, this is great for their development, but it needs to be safe. Students need to be landing on feet as much as possible and they need to be doing handstands and cartwheels where they have enough space. - 'Bridges' are never allowed - see picture below. We are not allowed to teach this and this is not something the students can do at school. In the Jump Rope For Heart Program we saw a fantastic improvement in skill and an improvement in fitness. Thanks to all those parents and students who raised nearly $900 for the Heart Foundation. Prizes are on their way! Gymnastics is an activity where we always gain a large improvement in upper body strength, flexibility and skills. The students are really looking forward to it!
