World Ocean Day: "Healthy oceans, healthy planet"

On the 8th of June, it was World Ocean Day!

Oceans play a major role in everyday life. For the Kingdom of the Netherlands, water is both our strongest asset and biggest challenge. The country is confronted by it on the coastlines, but also within, as over 60% of the land area is susceptible to flooding.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands enters into demand-driven partnerships all over the world. Our Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) teams mitigate the consequences of typhoons and flooding. We participate in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) projects, contributing over EUR 90 million annually to projects aimed at guaranteeing a clean, safe, secure and efficient water supply.

The 2016 World Ocean Day theme was ‘Healthy oceans, healthy planet’.

End of Dutch EU Presidency

The end of June marked the end of the Dutch EU presidency, as Slovakia takes over as president of the Council of the European Union.

The Netherlands presidency work programme focused on four key areas: migration and international security, sound finances and a robust eurozone, Europe as an innovator and job creator and forward-looking climate and energy policies.

During the presidency, over 7,000 photos were taken during the meetings in Amsterdam. Together they provide a visual testimony to many aspects of the Presidency that were relatively unknown to the outside world. The e-zines published by ‪#‎EU2016NL‬ also provide an insight into the achievements of the Dutch presidency during its 6 months run.

We wish Slovakia the best of luck as new president of the Council of the European Union!

"Take on the Dutch!" at Bridgestone World Solar Challenge

The Dutch teams clearly left their mark during the 2015 edition, as next year’s theme has been announced by the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge: “Take on the Dutch”!

Last year, the Dutch contestants won three different prizes: first and second place for the Challenger class (Nuon Solar Team TU Delft & Solar Team Twente) and first place for Cruiser class (Solar Team Eindhoven).

Additionally, Solar Team Twente won the Technical Innovation Award.

In friendly competition with others attempting the same goals, the teams depart Darwin aiming to be the first to arrive in Adelaide, some 3,000 km to the south.

We look forward to seeing all international teams try to “Take on the Dutch” in Darwin, 8-15 October 2017! ‪#‎BWSCtakeontheDutch‬

Passport applications

As you are probably aware, the Consulate-General in Sydney is the only representation in Australia where you can apply for a Dutch passport. That will not change with the assignment of new honorary consuls.

Regarding passports, you are advised to please make sure that you always possess a valid passport. We come across cases where people need to urgently travel to the Netherlands but are unable to since their passports have expired. Travel will then be delayed because of the passport renewal process.

Please also note that it is important that your passport has a remaining validity of at least 6 months.

There are many Asian countries that will not allow you to enter, not even for a transit at the airport without passing the immigration counters.

Honorary Consul: Queensland

The Consulate-General is sad to inform you that the assignment of the honorary consul in Brisbane, Mr. Kasper Kuiper has come to an end. For many people he was known as Captain Kuiper, thanks to his maritime past. As a consul Capt. Kuiper always tried to give the very best possible assistance to Dutch citizens who contacted him for different formalities.

However, for the time being these formalities cannot be handled in Brisbane anymore as there is no successor yet. The embassy in Canberra, together with the Consulate-General in Sydney, is working hard to have a new honorary consul for Queensland installed as soon as possible.

Honorary Consul: Victoria

We are pleased to inform you that in Victoria, a new honorary consul has recently been selected. In the meanwhile, the formalities about his assignment are being dealt with.

These include drafting an exequatur, equivalent to a letter of credence, to be signed by H.M. the King. As soon as this has been finalised and the new consul can be installed, more information will follow.
