Barnard to Award Student Academic Achievement

On Thursday, June 6, at 1:30 pm, Barnard will hold its Academic Awards assembly to honor student achievement in academics. Students to be honored will be those who have achieved Honor Roll for 3 straight quarters, Principal's Honors (straight A's for the entire year), Perfect Attendance, Citizenship, Most Improved and NWEA gains and highest scores. Students will also be recognized for History and Science Fair honors. Barnard will be moving toward a universal approach to Academic Honors next year, which will be published for parents and implemented school wide. If your child will be receiving an award on Thursday, you will receive a notice with your student on Monday.

Barnard Wins $5000 Grant for Chicago Children's Choir Program for 2013/2014!

For another year, Barnard voices will sing in harmony, thanks to a $5000 grant just awarded to Barnard school. The grant will allow the program to continue, despite any changes or shifts in our budget for the upcoming year. The Chicago Children's Choir program will begin in September and continue through to May, as it has been this year. We are excited to offer this opportunity once again to our students, and to continue this meaningful partnership with this exceptional Chicago institution. Attendance and Student Achievement Not Connected? Think Again! Barnard's NWEA Scores Support Connection.

As we wind down our NWEA testing window, it's important to note that as our teachers are working tirelessly to ensure your child is receiving a quality education, you play an important role in this process. Early data from Barnard's End of Year assessments support the idea that attendance and student achievement are closely linked. Many of our strongest scores and highest  gains this Spring came from students with either perfect or near perfect attendance and minimal tardies. We will be sharing your child's results with you as well as following up with you to answer any questions you might have regarding your child's NWEA results. In the meantime, keep in mind that the best place for your child to be learning during the school day is in school, on time, with his/her teachers and classmates.

The Center for Parent Involvement has some great information on how to play an important role in your child's education. Click here to link to their website.

Think Summer! Plan Now for Your Child's Summer Enrichment - Chicago Style!

Learning happens everywhere in the city—in libraries, parks, museums and cultural institutions, community-based organizations, colleges and universities, schools, and beyond. This summer, Mayor Rahm Emanuel is challenging all Chicago youth to participate in the Summer of Learning, a citywide effort to engage youth in hands-on learning opportunities—particularly in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. School stops for the summer, but learning never should.

More than 100 organizations across the city have joined forces to integrate learning into summer activities for youth of all ages in every Chicago neighborhood.

Participants learn over the summer with local programs (i.e.: zoo, library, parks) and earn badges along the way. The badges they earn roll up into city-level badges. The city-level badges unlock access to the challenges where learners can make projects and learn more skills, and then showcase their work at a set of events in Chicago at the end of the summer.

All of that badge info—everything from the initial organization badges to the top-level challenges and badges—feeds back into the schools in the fall.

The Chicago Summer of Learning site is almost ready! In the meantime, if you have earned a badge, enter your email address and secret claim code onto the Summer of Learning website. They'll email you when the site launches so you can create your account and see your badge!
