Key Messages Week 4 - Term 3* Change of Process *Contacting your child during school hoursDear Parents and Carers, I am writing to you about a change we are implementing in the processes to use if you need to contact your son or daughter urgently. We receive many messages from parents through emails or phone calls to reception to convey to students. Parents may also simply call in and ask that their student be brought to them because they need to take them home due to unforeseen circumstances. As the school has grown – and it continues to grow - it has become logistically impossible to manage these requests. Our policy is to restrict use of the PA system to a minimum as it disrupts classes significantly. Our reception staff have tried lots of different ways to contact students to give them messages, often without great success. This means that their work is seriously disrupted often as they need to go and find students to pass on messages or because their parent has arrived to collect them. This is no longer feasible. Given this, we ask you to follow the process below:
For next week, as families familiarise themselves with the new process, our reception staff will continue to support you with regard to getting messages to students or getting them from class. However, from Monday, 26 August, this will no longer be the case. Thank you for your understanding and your cooperation with this. Warm regards Catherine Rey
Assessment Calendar Assessment Calendars are now available for each year level on the JPC Website https://www.jpc.act.edu.au/teaching-learning/assessment-calendar/ and through Moodle under Parent Information/Assessment Calendar. These calendars summarise key assessment dates for students. As our first trial, there may be some elective dates missing and some dates may indicate a week. Please note that there may be changes to the information as specific due dates are set or for other reasons negotiated with the students. Students will be informed of specific dates when the tasks are handed out. A reminder that assessment tasks are also available in Moodle under the relevant subject. If you have any feedback with regards to the Assessment Calendar, email either myself or the college office. Regards, Dr Ann Cleary
It’s that cold time of year again… A friendly reminder from the Leaders of Wellbeing team of the standards for winter uniforms (pictured to the right). Unfortunately, a number of students have begun wearing non-JPC jumpers, hoodies and jackets throughout the school day, and are not wearing the correct JPC winter uniform. Students are required to wear the red/navy V-neck school jumpers and/or their navy weatherproof jackets - and are welcome to wear both to keep warm during winter. These are the only jumpers and jackets that are to be worn. These can be purchased as new (from Lowes, Gungahlin), or second-hand from the uniform shop (please see front office staff to enquire). Students may also wear beanies, gloves and scarves in JPC colours when not in class. (JPC colours are red, white and navy blue). If you or your child are uncertain about what is included in the winter uniform, please check the uniform policy on the JPC website: https://www.jpc.act.edu.au/our-community/jpc-parents/uniform/ Kind regards from the Leaders of Wellbeing Team. Survey - How does your child travel to school? Following on from last week's Wellbeing message about the car park and bus bay at the end of the school day, we ask if you could please complete a quick survey (see link below) about how your child/children travel to/from school. The survey will only take 2 minutes of your time. Many thanks for your cooperation. Paul McKie Prayer for Staff Dear God, let us keep in our hearts the staff and teachers who go above and beyond with everything they do within the school community, all those who are supportive and compassionate and never hesitate to help out a student or fellow staff member. May you give them the strength to continue to be dedicated, passionate and enthusiastic in all that they do, support them in their hours not only dedicated at school but also in the countless hours after. Thank you for all those teachers who have given their heart and time to teaching, for all those who have encouraged and supported students on their journeys and in their hardships, and especially for all those teachers who have recognised the hidden talents and potential within all of their students. We pray that the staff and teachers here at JPC can continue to help their students flourish and find their way through life and know that all of their work and hours have not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. - Charlie Jenkins and Maddie Foster, Yr 11 - Shine Last Wednesday 7th August a vibrant group of Year 9 and 10 Youth Ministry students attended the Canberra Goulburn diocesan SHINE student gathering held at Marist College. It was a day to network and meet Youth Ministry students from other Catholic schools, participate in workshops to explore particular parts of Youth Ministry and gather in prayer and reflection. Students from St John Paul II College approached the day with open hearts and positive attitudes and conducted themselves with respect. It was a great day out together and students took up many opportunities to learn, connect and grow. Special thanks to Miss. Yolandi Swart, Miss. Cheryl Jones and Mrs. Sarah Smith for their contribution to the success of the day and journeying with our students. RMC Excursion On Tuesday 13th August the Music students and Defence students went to the Canberra Theatre to watch the RMC Band (The Royal Military College Band). Mrs Walsh, Miss Robinson and 30 students took buses to the Theatre to listen to the band play and sing. The songs were played beautifully and listening to all the instruments mix together was music to our ears, literally and figuratively. Attending this was a wonderous experience because it shows that dedication, persistence, teamwork and passion can make beautiful things. A huge thank you to Mrs. Walsh for organising this amazing excursion. Delanie Simmons, Yr 7 The RMC Music at Midday was a great experience as it provided defence and non-defence students with a chance to see the Royal Military Canberra band perform. With having an insight into what the RMC can provide musicians in terms of what bands and performances they provide. Luke Ripper, Year 11 Sport SSACT Northside Regional Carnival (Soccer) Fifteen boys from Year 7 & 8 represented St John Paul II College in the SSACT Soccer Competition on Thursday 15 August at Dickson Playing Fields. All boys played extremely well and should be very proud of their efforts & behaviour. Our first match against Amaroo School was a close affair. The deadlock was broken late by a lovely goal from Dominic Pelle. The final result was a 1-0 win. Our second game was against our neighbours, Gold Creek High School. Again, this was a tight match. Ashton Antioch scored a superb goal from a free-kick just out of the penalty box. Shortly after, GC equalised. However, a strong goal from Matteo Vardanega ensured we were 2-1 victors. The third match, unfortunately, was not a contest. Kaleen High School was completely overwhelmed losing heavily 8 goals to 1. Goals were scored by Ethan Russell, Matteo Vardanega, Jordan Jonathan & Dinesh Pacchai. A classy header by Nicholas Colquhuon added to the total. However, a special mention goes to the impressive hat-trick by Braydon Dunbar- what made this feat particularly remarkable is that Braydon's usual position is goal keeper. It must be said that the boys from Kaleen HS were quite valiant as they only had 1 reserve player whereas we had four. They were run off their feet & out classed but never gave up, managing to score 1 goal as well. Our final match was against St Francis Xavier. This was our toughest encounter. It was quite physical with a few yellow cards issued. Both teams had many attacking chances but failed to convert. The final score was nil all. Fine commitment was displayed also by Dylan Bonifacio, Hayden Gardiner, Hayden Mortimer, Jordan Prior, Luke Hewitt, Giuseppe Boccuzzo & Marcus Subasic. Perhaps unsurprisingly due to the hat-trick of goals, man of the match was Braydon Dunbar, who was dominant and inspiring as the team's goal keeper. JPC topped their pool and out of 13 schools, finished second overall! Well done JPC! We have qualified to the second round, where we will do battle with the top schools of the Southside in 2 weeks' time. Thank you to Ms Turner for organising the event, and to Mr Robertson for running the trials and selecting a fine team. Mr Giuseppe Battaglia 2019 Table Tennis Championships wrap up: By Pari Malhotra and Chiara Nunes On a cold Wednesday morning (Week 3) several JPC students came together to compete against other high schools from all across Canberra at the Tuggeranong Archery Centre. It was a tough, yet exciting day with heaps of challenges along the way. This was our experience: As we walked down the corridor and into the ginormous building we found ourselves to be surrounded in a vigorous number of table tennis tables, our hearts were pounding from all the before game nerves. But before we knew it we were playing our first match. It made us calm down and think there was nothing to worry about. As we progressed to the second match coming off a win, we were not ready for the challenge ahead. This match was crazy and intense and the scores were tied, which meant we had to result in the decider through a doubles match. We unfortunately lost this match with a margin. After losing our first game of the day we had a discussion on our strengths and weaknesses, and what we could improve next time. With our new mindset we progressed all the way through the knockout stages and into the finals. The finals were the most thrilling game we both had ever competed in. The scores were tied and we had to play the decider match - the doubles game. Dun dun dunnnn. Everyone was nervous and the air was filled with excitement. We were well into the game when suddenly our opponents kept hitting smashes. We were stunned but had to keep trying. Sadly, we lost this match. Although we were still bubbling with excitement because we came second! It was a day filled with adventures and roller coasters. We made new friends and learned lessons along the way. 1) Keep trying and NEVER lose heart 2) Challenges make you discover new things about yourself 3) Planning is the path to success These remind us that at the end of the day some people lose while others win, no matter what, you should always keep your spirits high. The most valuable award is knowledge and experience which we gained throughout the day. Coming second was a bonus for us and we are very delighted that we were representatives of JPC. We gave it our best shot and will continue loving Table Tennis. Hurricanes Softball Club is one of Northside’s premium softball clubs in ACT and caters for primary and high school boys and girls (5-17 years). Hurricanes is committed to providing players and their families with a Club that will not only support players’ current needs, but their future growth and development in softball and the broader community. Key to our efforts is the continued identification and development of talent, among the players (teenaged) and their families. Through this, the Club further provides an increased, supportive and responsible network of coaches, mentors, scorers and managers that will contribute towards the continued development of its players’ esteem and confidence while also promoting positive values of gender, individually and as part of social interaction. Families are additionally provided opportunities, and are supported to further their own development as either participants (adult social teams), support staff (coaches, scorers, managers, etc) or as active spectators. Club players are enabled to better engage with their family-based environment. Our culture actively engages direct and associated components that provide an opportunity for increased positive social interaction. We have multiple teams being entered in the next season on a Saturday morning and mid-week competitions so why not come and play for the Hurricanes! The training season commences in mid-September 2019 so complete your registration form completed now via our website to secure your place on a team.
