Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

Your Sequoia Yacht Club really shined brightly at last Saturday’s PortFest, if I say so myself.  Our many volunteers lead by the tireless Nick Weber served coffee, mai-tais, bloody marys and several different beers, sodas and waters to a thirsty public.  Demand was high due to good crowds and the warm and sunny weather.  Climate best indeed!

See these photos and more on the club Facebook page: www.facebook.com/sequoiayc

Thank you to our volunteer bartenders:  Nick and Robin Weber, Dan Doud, Patty Corcoran, David Jackson, Deidre Sparks , Todd Meserle, Tim and Carol Petersen, Ted and Christine Eberle, Peter Weight and Anja Bog, Andrew and Ian Rist, Winston Bumpus, Fred Ganjei, Cliff Cramer,  Tom Keegan, Rick and Petra Gilmore, Kathy Harris and Jeff Bruton.

I also want to acknowledge Larry Mayne for cooking up sausages, Deb Garvey, James and Christine Kupczak, Rick and Linda Dalton, Mark Nardini, and Phaedra Fischer.  I also want to recognize Bar Houston for his work on the sound system.

Thank you to the float team for the touch up before the display Saturday and to Olivia Sadlowski who set up a display and sold haberdasher goods on the lawn.

This weekend on Friday, October 10th we will enjoy our monthly General Meeting and Drop in Dinner.  This special meeting elects your new officers for 2015 so you don't want to miss it. Lina has developed the following menu for the evening:

  • Cioppino or
  • Baked Chicken
  • Linguini and Spiral Pasta with Alfredo Sauce or
  • Marinara Sauce with veggies (vegetarian)
  • Also, salad with tomatoes, cucumber and artichoke hearts
  • Sheet cake with ice cream.
  • Cost $ 15.00

Next Saturday, October 18th your club is hosting the Racers' Ribs Dinner.  This is our annual event honoring our competitive sailors and everybody is welcome.  And to all you skippers out there who are thinking – nah, I won’t go…I didn’t win anything… well, woe is you!  But perhaps you might consider treating your long suffering crew to a lighthearted evening of fun and celebration.  Who knows, your thoughtfulness might even lead to quicker tacks and snappier jibes.  And to some of our newer members;  how about coming to see about crewing on a boat for the upcoming Winter Series of races next year.  Please check the club and on-line for a sign-up sheet for this event.

Looking ahead to the latter half of the month, we will have another Drop In Dinner on Friday, October 24th and, of course, a Halloween Party on Friday, October 31st.

We are also very close to starting the final repairs to the galley and Oates Room floor.  With any luck board and insurance company approval, we should have the whole adventure behind us by mid November!

Okay, onto bikes and Bike Buiding.  Later this month, I will share photos and specifications for kid’s bikes of various styles and prices.  I will have a sign-up sheet listing some bike purchase alternatives.  I am hoping to begin buying bikes by early to mid November.   There will be a helmet purchase option as well. More information is available HERE.

See you around the club!

CORKSCREWed SLOUGH el toro regatta

For hundreds of years now (slight exaggeration) intrepid members of Sequoia Yacht Club have turned out en mass (more or less) to compete in the time honored Corkscrew(ed) Slough el Toro Regatta.

This is YOUR chance to prove you're not just some good looking ne'er do well! Prove to your friends and fellow members that you really, really know how to race a real sailboat - not some 40-foot monstrosity that even Commodore Bumpus can manhandle (sorry Winston, it's a good cause).

The race is October 18th and the skippers' meeting is 1100 hours (that's 11 am folks). You can find the Sailing Instructions HERE.

This will be more fun than sitting on the club deck watching other people dock. Be there or be square.
