Pania's Pānui Congratulations to all the finalists in the New Zealand Tourism Awards announced this week. TIME Unlimited and Kāpiti Island Nature Tours are both finalists for the Hei kai kei aku ringa Māori Tourism Award, and Waitangi Treaty Grounds for the ServiceIQ Visitor Experience Award. TIME Unlimited is also a finalist in the MBIE Industry Alignment Award. Last night we also celebrated Mavis Mullins’ induction into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame. Mavis joins other significant Māori business luminaries in the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame including Te Puea Herangi, Sir Āpirana Ngata, Sir Ralph Norris, and Sir Chris Mace. Mavis also becomes one of 11 women out of a total of 155 Inductees. Ngā mihi, na, Pania and the team at NZ Māori Tourism Kei te mōhio rānei koe? (Did you know?) At the Cathy Pacific Travel Media Awards last week, Peter Drury captured the best travel image, published in the NZ Listener, Children from Turangawaewae take part in Waka ama. Shandelle Battersby wrote the best travel story about a Māori Experience which was published in NZ Herald. The story was titled “Valley Girl”. Shandelle writes about her experience on the Hollyford track. Te nama o te wiki (Number of the week) Tourism expenditure grew in all regions over the year to June 2017. The regions with the fastest growing tourism spend were West Coast, which increased 15 per cent over the year to June 2017 to $540 million, followed by Tasman (up 12 per cent to $310 million) and Northland (up 10 per cent to $1.1 billion). MBIE has recently released a user guide providing information on how the estimates are calculated and how they should be interpreted. TIA State of the Tourism Industry Survey What is the current state of the tourism industry in Aotearoa New Zealand? TIA would like to hear your thoughts on the last 12 months and what the key issues are for our industry. This year TIA is partnering with WelTec to deliver a new approach to tell the story of tourism in Aotearoa New Zealand. The survey should take 10-15 minutes, depending on how much comment you wish to provide. Commercial Advisors Scheme The scheme funds Māori collectives up to $60,000 to work with a Commercial Advisor for up to 18 months. The advisors offer professional business advice and mentoring as they work with collectives on business development projects aimed at realising the potential commercial value of the collective’s assets. The scheme is open to collectives at a range of stages of commercial development, from initial options analyses and feasibility studies, through to business case development, strategic planning, or market analysis and expansion. It also supports collectives with assets from a wide range of primary and other sectors. The Commercial Advisors Scheme is open to Māori collectives, including trusts, incorporations, post-settlement governance entities and similar organisations. Coalitions of collectives may also apply. Applications close 11 September. Tourism Infrastructure Fund information sessions MBIE are hosting a range of information sessions around the country on the newly formed Tourism Infrastructure Fund. This will be an opportunity to find out more about the Fund, the criteria, what sorts of projects might qualify and how to apply for funding. Click here to find when they will be held in your town. Māori performing arts in demand on global stages Māori Performing Arts is in demand and taking the world by storm, but how is it helping the tourism industry here in New Zealand? According to New Zealand Māori Tourism, it's leading the way. Chairperson Dale Stephens says “Tourism has moved on from taking a photo of a big high-rise tower and going to a concert. It’s actually about experiences now, and cultural experience is a big part of tourism and Māori make that happen for us here in New Zealand.” Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Global Insights Conference The PATA Conference is coming back to Auckland, playing host to leading tourism experts and international thought leaders from around the world on Friday, 29 September 2017 at Skycity. This year’s theme is ‘R U Future Ready?’ and will include senior speakers from Trip Advisor, Boeing, Microsoft, Vivid Sydney, BBC, and PATA to name a few.
