UPDATE YOUR DETAILS FOR THE 2014 LCA YEARBOOK
The LCA is preparing for the production of the 2014 Yearbook. Please ensure that if you are a pastor, lay worker or member of a board, commission, committee or department of the LCA or a district or a congregation that your personal details and those of your organisation are up to date in LAMP.  This is your responsibility rather than that of the District of National office.  Unable to remember your password to LAMP?  Use the ‘forgotten password’  message on the LAMP login page.  If you have any problems updating any details please email the LAMP helpline at help@lamp.lca.org.au   The deadline for updated entries in Lamp to be included in the 2014 Yearbook is 16th October 2013.

LSF NATIONAL RETREAT 2014
For many years, LSF (Lutheran Students and Friends) has run a national camp for young adults over summer, where those who have finished high school can gather, connect, have fun, and grow in faith. The LSF National Retreat gathers young adults (post high school, generally 18-30) from all around Australia for a week of fun, fellowship, study, and a chance to explore the big questions in an important transitional time in life. The retreat for 2014 will be held in Victoria at Tandara Lutheran Camp, Halls Gap, from 20-24 January 2014 under the theme 'Camp Q&A.' Guest panellists will help to answer young adults' questions through panel discussion and open forum. This will be a weeklong chance for young adults to explore their big questions, as well as making connections and having fun. More details are available at www.lsf.org.au/vic .

NAIROBI TERROR ATTACK
Through Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS), the LCA is supporting refugees in Kenya - at Kakuma in the north, and at Dadaab on the border with Somalia. Work at Dadaab has in the past been threatened by attacks from Al Shabab terrorists, the same group claiming responsibility for the Nairobi terror attack. Our Lutheran (World Federation) office is only 9 kilometres from the site of the attack. We thank God it appears staff and families are safe, though many of our fellow workers are likely to know someone who was a victim. As we await information, we ask your prayers for:

  •   a safe speedy end to the siege situation
  •   comfort for those who have suffered loss
  •   protection for the teams you support working with refugees
  •   long-term peace and security, so families can return to their homes in safety

NATIONAL POLICE REMEMBRANCE DAY
In 2013, National Police Remembrance Day is being held throughout Australia and the Southwest Pacific on Friday, 27 September. National Police Remembrance Day is a significant day of commemoration where people can reflect on each individual police force and remember those officers killed on duty. It provides an opportunity to honour all police who have given their lives serving the Australian and Southwest Pacific communities. The National Police Memorial, located in Canberra, was completed in 2006 with the names of 719 fallen officers inscribed on a wall of brass touch stones. The touchstones include the officer's rank, name, jurisdiction and place and date of death. The names of officers killed in the preceding year are added at each National Police Remembrance Day Service. This year will see the list of officers named on the National Police Memorial reach 754 since Constable Joseph Luker of Sydney became the first police death on duty in Australia in 1803. Consult your State police home pages for remembrance service details in your area.

SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY 29 SEPTEMBER 2013
The theme for Social Justice Sunday  this year is ‘Social Justice Matters: What does the Lord require of you?’. The National Council of Churches Australia (NCCA) has produced a resource that acknowledges that embracing the call to do justice is very challenging. The resource includes articles on: Social Justice: The Biblical Foundations; Millennium Development Goals: A job that Needs Finishing; Taking Responsibility for Justice: The Case of Refugees; Disability, Spirituality, Accessibility; and The Call for Leadership: the Prevention of Violence against Women and Girls. The Social Justice Matters resource and other worship resources can be downloaded here.

The LCA have a photocopier that is surplus to requirements.  Before we consign it to recycling, if there is a Lutheran organisation that would like to have it for their use please contact us.  It will be given away on a first in first served basis.  The copier/scanner/fax is a Fuji Xerox Docucentre – II – 3005 model.  There is a maintenance contract on it which can be transferred to the new owners.  No charge for the machine, but you will need to arrange for it to be moved to its new abode.  Please contact Chelsea Hampel at National Office (Chelsea.hampel@lca.org.au).

CHANGE TO BASE LINE CHARGES ON LCA TELSTRA CONTACT
There has been an increase in the base line charges for land line telephone services from Telstra.  This is their general increase and is the first increase for a number of years.  This has come through in the recent billing rounds and is backdated to about mid-August.  However, it is obvious that someone at Telstra has got a little overzealous with the increases and instead of approximately $2 per line per month the amount is ranging from $8 to $12 per month.  Telstra are reviewing their processes and will be endeavouring to fix it in the next billing round.  If there is not a credit for the overcharge on your next account please call Telstra direct on 1800 730 065 (option 2) and complain directly.

TELSTRA CONTRACT RENEWED
The LCA have recently signed a new contract with Telstra, which now replaces the one signed in December 2010.  This has resulted in
• reductions to call rates and increases to data allowances on most mobile plans.
• reductions on call rates on landlines
• introduction of Ultimate Mobile plans
• definitions of data access for LCA organisations; and
• anniversary date is now June (changed from December)
If you do not notice these changes coming through your billing cycles please contact Telstra on 1800730065 (option 2) or if you are not a party to the contract and wish to transfer in please call Church Resources (1300CHURCH) to arrange.
