Devotional Message from Bishop Lester

Held by the Risen Christ (2 Timothy 4:9-18)

2 Timothy 4:9-18
Our recent Pastors' Conference and District Convention recalled some of the joys and challenges faced by the church in our day. Speaking of challenges, we were reminded of the reality of diminishing pastoral supply, declining congregations, fewer resources, the pain of broken fellowship, opposition, strained relationships, and difficult personal circumstances.

Paul’s closing words in 2 Timothy 4 speak directly into such a season...

District Convention Elect New Bishop & Assistant Bishop

During the 2026 LCAVD Convention of Synod, Pastor Brett Kennett was elected as the next LCAVD Bishop and Pastor Hans Peethala was elected as the next LCAVD Assistant Bishop. LCAVD is blessed to continue to receive the service of Pastors Brett and Hans.
Assistant Bishop Hans was officially installed during the Convention Closing Worship.
Pastor Brett will be installed as Bishop during an Installation service on Sunday November 22. We welcome you to join us for this special occasion, please see below 'Events in the District' for more details.

Vale Peter Russell

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our brother in Christ, Peter Russell.  Peter was a member of the District Staff team, in the role of Executive Assistant to the Bishop and Project Officer.
Peter had been quite unwell for some months, and passed away on Friday, 16 October 2026, at the Mulgrave Private Hospital, following a short period of palliative care.  He is survived by his wife Christine and their wider family, including grandchildren.
Peter joined the LCA Vic-Tas District team in May 2023, succeeding Kate Burke in the EA role. During his time with us, Peter primarily provided operational assistance to the Bishop, and also assisted the managing of District projects and events such as the Continuing Education Program and Convention of Synod. Another of his many projects was to formalise arrangements for Vacancy Pastoral Supply in the Vic-Tas District, and he worked closely with numerous Pastors Emeriti who serve our congregations in vacancy.
District staff were blessed to witness and share Peter’s deep faith in our Lord and Saviour.  We know that he is now safe in the arms of God.
Blessed be his memory.

2027 General Convention of Synod

Planning to attend the 2027 General Convention of Synod?
Next October, General Synod will bring the LCANZ together in Brisbane (October 1-4, 2027).
If you have started searching for accommodation and a property appeared unavailable, it may be worth checking again. Booking windows and room releases vary between properties, so an online result does not always mean every room is taken. You can also contact the property directly.
Keep planning, keep checking, and book when you find a suitable option.
The LCANZ Synod Planning Team have also provided this travel advice letter to help with your preparations.

St David's celebrates 160 years!

Image: iStock - artplus

On Sunday 11 October 2026, there was a wonderful gathering of 55 people to give thanks to God and to celebrate the significant milestone event of the 160th year of St David's at Freshwater Creek.
The Church was filled to capacity, the singing was hearty, and there was a great feeling of joy and fellowship between those who were able to attend. A delicious afternoon tea was enjoyed by all after the worship service. Doing the honours of the cutting the cake were Jean Seiffert and June Winter, the longest members, in attendance, on the day. The cake was made by a friend Jean Seiffert's, Valerie Field.
A special thanks to those who made the day possible: the organisation of Sheree Seifert and Lois Perrett, Pastor Robert Bartholomaeus who led the worship service, and organist, Hauke Worpel.

Chinese Calligraphy Class at St Paul's Box Hill

Last week the St Paul’s community were blessed by members of our partner congregation, the Chinese Lutheran Church (CLC), running a Chinese Calligraphy class in the café. Carmen from the Chinese Lutheran Church came up with this fantastic idea to support Senior’s month when she saw St Paul’s members sharing a fortnightly lunch. Husband and wife, Stephen and Eva, ran the event with Stephen teaching the class, ably assisted by Tim, another CLC member.

Feature: The school worship services making a difference in Victoria

Each month, we shine the spotlight on particularly special stories from our region. This month, hear from Samantha Hill and Pastor Nathan Hedt as they take us behind the scenes of two different worship services held at Lutheran schools in different corners of Victoria. Refresh (Geelong Lutheran College, Armstrong Creek) and Ignite (Luther College, Croydon Hills) are two inspiring worship services forming communities around God's word.

What would bring 50 parents and children to gather voluntarily in a school classroom on a Sunday evening?

Believe it or not, this is something occurring regularly at Lutheran schools across Victoria. Once a month, on a Sunday evening, families gather at Geelong Lutheran College (GLC), Armstrong Creek, and Luther College, Croydon Hills, for a meal and time of worship...

IMPORTANT: Changes to Victorian Working with Children Check

From the 19th October 2026, Victoria is strengthening the Working with Children (WWC) Check to provide greater safeguards for children and to help organisations make safer decisions about the people they engage in paid or voluntary child-related work. These changes have occurred after the ‘Rapid Child Safety Review’ in 2025.

Prayer List

Prayer
Faithful God, you accompany your people through wilderness and uncertainty, through endings and new beginnings.
We give thanks for those who have guided us: for their courage and patience, their vision and persistence, and the love that sustained their service.
Give those who lead today wisdom to listen, courage to ask difficult questions, and generosity to nurture the gifts of others.
When it is time to lay down responsibility, give us grace to release it, and freedom to welcome what comes next.
Bless those who take up leadership. May they draw strength from what they have received and find room to respond with imagination to the challenges of their own time.
Help us honour the past and remain open to your unfolding promise.
God of every generation, our lives are part of a story larger than we can see.
Make us faithful in our part, generous in our leaving, and hopeful for those whose footsteps will follow. Amen.
