Dear Colleagues, Welcome to our first newsletter. We hope for those of you who were on leave for February Half Term that you had an enjoyable break. We can’t believe it has been less than a year since we launched the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools, time has flown by and we have had many fantastic opportunities and have met some wonderful colleagues from both the education and charity sector who are dedicated to improving the life chances of young people and developing a whole school approach to mental health which encompasses both pupils’ and staff wellbeing. We have been lucky to have been invited to some really great events to speak at or to be a part of including the launch of the Royal Foundation’s Mentally Healthy Pilot Website, a MAT conference on Mental Health and Wellbeing, the launch of a Mental Health and Wellbeing network in Oxfordshire, several TeachMeets and the list goes on……. Best wishes, School Mental Health Award Since its launch in September 2017 we have over 140 schools working towards the School Mental Health Award. Schools across England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and international schools are using the competency framework which is evidence based as a toolkit to develop a whole school mental health approach and are liaising with their allocated coach to submit their school for the award. The feedback we have received to date has been overwhelming with schools taking to twitter to comment on the quality. We were delighted to visit a school recently and just happened to come across their Pledge Certificate proudly displayed (we just had to take a sneaky pic). Schools who are working towards the School Mental Health Award will also have the opportunity to work towards the newly launched LGBTQ+ Inclusion in Education Award at a discounted cost. Further information can be found here – http://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/carnegie-school-of-education/carnegie-centre-of-excellence-for-mental-health-in-schools/school-mental-health-award/ First School Mental Health Award Recipient We are delighted to confirm that we have our first recipient of the School Mental Health Award. Congratulations to Eyres Monsell Primary School who have been awarded Gold Status. We very much look forward to celebrating with the school at the conference and presenting their plaque. Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead Governor Our Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead Governor e-module in partnership with TheSchoolBus is proving to be a resounding success for governors, the e-module comprises of a governing board self-assessment diagnostic, online coach / mentor, role and responsibilities, activities and in-school visit actions and activities. One Local Authority has committed to their being a Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead Governor in each of their 80 schools. Further information can be found here Quote from Tracey Middleton, governor at a Primary School ‘The module is an excellent guide and useful reflection tool in particular the Core Areas of Responsibility’ Working Paper Series We have recently launched a Working Paper Series which is a series of papers / think pieces which celebrate the practices that is being undertaken by schools and other organisations to improve children and young people’s mental health. Volumes 1 and 2 are available to download. We would be delighted to hear from members of our mailing list who would like to contribute and share their work. The papers, thinkpieces don’t need to be of an academic nature. http://leedsbeckett.ac.uk/riches/our-research/working-paper-series/mental-health/ Our next theme will be Resilience and will be out in the Spring Term and will feature a guest editor. Research We have recently completed two research projects, one in conjunction with TheSchoolBus and one with Primary Teach Findings from the research indicate that teachers feel that they need further professional development to enable them to support the mental health needs of children and young people. Additionally, teachers perceive that poor teacher mental health has a detrimental impact on the quality of their teaching, their relationships with students and colleagues and the progress of their students. Watch out for our press release or email us for more information. http://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/news/0218-leeds-beckett-university-offers-fully-funded-phd-courses/ Response to the Green Paper The Government's Green Paper on Children's Mental Health is a welcome contribution to the work that we have started. The government wants to support every school to have a designated lead for mental health who can lead the whole school approach to mental health. This is something that we are already supporting schools with via our school mental health leadership programmes. The green paper also sets out proposals to create a new cadre of colleagues better able to work across schools and CAMHS to provide support to children pre-threshold. This could be a big step forwards in terms of providing support to pupils who have mild-moderate mental health challenges. Contribute to the Green Paper before 2nd March: Recommendations We are open to signposting other organisations, their events and social media who we have met along the way and whose events we may be a part of who share our ethos and vision. A conference which you may be interested in is listed below and features a member of our advisory board Sharon White OBE. Dean Johnstone, co-founder of the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools will also be speaking at this event. Partnerships and Collaborations We are delighted to announce a partnership with Edsential Community Interest Company, who will be delivering some of our programmes on our behalf in the North West We look forward to further developing our relationship with them.
