The Irish Gerontological Society, together with the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatraics - European Region, would be grateful if you could kindly forward this important newsletter update to your colleagues and friends to whom it may be of interest.

Message from the President of the Irish Gerontological Society, Mo Flynn

Season's Greetings to our colleagues and friends worldwide.  I am very much looking forward to welcoming you to Dublin in April 2015.

We are delighted to announce that the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, has accepted our invitation to open the congress. President Higgins has, through his presidency, been open to new paradigms of thought and action and has sought to develop a public discourse that places human flourishing and an ethic of active citizenship at its heart.  Through a number of his speeches the President has explored the importance and challenge of ethics in Irish life and Ireland’s relationships abroad.

Due to unexpectedly large volume of submissions, and to do justice to the quality of the research, it has taken longer than anticipated to adjudicate the papers, notify the authors and develop the programme. Consequently the local organising committee has agreed to extend the early-bird registration date to Friday 16th January 2015 to accommodate author registrations. Please do be sure to avail yourself of the early-bird rates.

We would hope to have the provisional programme available online within the next week. The variety and expertise of the Congress participants is really exciting and I think will go a long way to this being one of the most exciting and stimulating meetings in many years.

Everyone in Ireland is working hard to ensure the smooth running of this conference and to ensure that you all have a most wonderful experience when you join us here in April 2015.

Warmest regards

Update from Prof. Des O'Neill, Chair Local Organising Committee

Plans are now well underway to ensure that this prestigeous event will be an inspirational and informative event for all our delegates.

Meanwhile, we continue to promote the 8th International Congress of the IAGG-ER worldwide, with a warm recption at many European national society meetings and the Gerontological Society of America.  Our endeavours have been attracting strong national and international attention and we have accepted 104 symposia and over 1300 abstract submissions from all over the world.

The programme is  under final stages of development and will be announced soon.

More keynote speakers will be announced in the next newsletter.

We look forward to a collegial, stimulating and friendly congress in April!

Fáilte go hÉireann - Welcome to Ireland!

'Sláinte', and other useful Irish Phrases!

With just over four short months to go to Congress, we thought it would be a good idea to teach you some useful Irish phrases for your visit with us.

When you raise your glass, you say Sláinte to your companions – it means Your Health.

Fáilte means Welcome, as in Céad Míle Fáiltea Hundred Thousand Welcomes.

Dia dhuit is a greeting, the literal translation is God be with you.

Slán means Goodbye.

Just ask one of the Local Organising Committee members for the correct pronunciation!!!!!!!!
