Who is Ready to Race Over 110 Nautical Miles in July?

It is the beginning of July and just like last year we are looking forward to a fantastic month of racing!

Along with the fun Beer Can Races we have been having, there's some great Sequoia club racing in store. So get out your calendar and get ready to put some nautical miles under your keel. With 5 Beer Can Races in July, if you race all of the July races you can beat last year's record of 108.8 nm. Here is the line up:

July 3 - Beer Can #13
July 10 - Beer Can #14
July 13 - Moonlight Marathon
July 17 - Beer Can #15
July 20 - Summer #4
July 24 - Beer Can #16
July 27 - Westpoint Regatta
July 31 - Beer Can #17

The Moonlight Marathon starts at 4:00 pm at Marker #3 & #4 with a course up the bay around Treasure Island and back. A total of approximately 41.5 nm but unfortunately it looks like the moon will be in its first quarter.

The Westpoint Regatta traditionally starts east of Treasure Island going Northwest leaving Alcatraz on Port then heading past the city waterfront for a downwind sail to Redwood City. This year due to the America's Cup, we will be avoiding the congestion of the AC72 race course with an alternative course planned which will go Northwest but stay away from the AC72 race course.

Delta Cruise Out August 5-9

It is that time of year  -- Delta Time.  For this year’s cruise out we will again be hosted by the Delta Yacht Club on their island oasis off the Stockton Deep Water Channel adjacent to marker 16.    Once again we will be sharing the island with our friends from the Oakland Yacht Club.

The theme of the week will be that of Gilligan’s Island.  There will be a party on Wednesday evening and plenty of games and activities throughout the week.

I believe the Delta is one of California’s great natural treasures and I know Delta veterans feel the same way.  This year I would like to encourage our new members and first time Delta cruisers to give it a try.

If you are a first time Delta cruiser, please let me know.

We will have a sign-up sheet available this week and all kinds of useful data and tips available.  We will also be making suggestions of where to stop on the journey up river and on the way home.  There are  still slips available in Benicia for the trip home.  Blacktoppers  are encouraged to come up for a day or two.

New Oil and Fuel Pollution Prevention Boating Videos

California’s Boating Clean and Green Program provides tips on proper oil and fuel management to the state’s recreational boating community through two new instructional videos.

Videos include tips and tools to prevent oil and fuel discharges; how to report oil and chemical spills; how to properly dispose of used oil; environmental laws; and information on other clean and safe boating practices recommended for before, during and after fueling boats.

The educational videos are a great resource not only to boaters, but to boating marina and yacht club operators in their efforts of keeping their facilities clean. Please share these valuable resources by posting the videos on your websites. Videos may be viewed and downloaded at www.BoatingCleanAndGreen.com
(look for DBW TV on that page).

The Division of Boating and Waterways and the California Coastal Commission’s Boating Clean and Green Program developed the videos in partnership with the San Francisco Estuary Partnership, the Keep the Delta Clean Program and the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation. Staff developed the video content with assistance, review and support from a Technical Advisory Group comprised of members with the marine industry and boating associations (listed in the videos credits).

The videos were shot in October 2012 in Sacramento (Riverbank Marina) and in Oakland (Oakland Yacht Club and Marina Village Yacht Harbor).  During the fuel video shot, staff worked with Captain Tommy Holtzman (Boat Owner and US Coast Guard Auxiliary), his boat the “Shady Ladies” and his crew (John Derrick Jr. and Warren Golubski (Boaters and US Coast Guard Auxiliary) and Chloe Golubski, an adorable dog.  In the oil clean boating video, staff worked with Captains Robert J. & Susan Engelhart and their boat “Music.”

The Boating Clean and Green Program is an education and outreach program conducted through the Division of Boating and Waterways and California Coastal Commission. The program promotes environmentally-sound boating practices to marine businesses and boaters.

Sequoia Yacht Club is listed in the credits for both videos due to our assistance as a member of the Technical Advisory Board for the content.
