VIVID Sydney reception

27 May 2016

On the 27th of May, a reception was held by the Consulate-General of the Netherlands and Philips Lighting for Holland Hub Australia members. It was held to celebrate the Spice Winds art installation at VIVID Sydney, created by mcdermottbaxter (AUS) and Toer (NL). The artwork commemorates the route early Dutch East India Company ships took to the East with a spectacular interplay of light and kinetic energy, and is supported by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Sydney and Philips Lighting.

The art installation is part of the Dirk Hartog 2016 celebrations, as this year both Australia and the Netherlands commemorate the 400th anniversary of Dutch East India Company skipper Dirk Hartog landing on the coast of Western Australia in 1616. He was the first recorded European to do so.

Olaf and Kerstens part of the HeadOn Photo Festival

Netherlands Consul-General Willem Cosijn shares his enthousiasm with Lord Mayor Clover Moore that the Olaf and Kerstens exhibition is part of the HeadOn Photo Festival and part of this bridge between Australia and international photographic markets.

Customs House was instrumental in showing this exhibition and we are very lucky the photographs will be displayed until 20th of June as they have been absorbed by the HeadOn festival.

The photographs of Olaf and Kerstens beautifully combine the international theme of HeadOn with the 400 year celebration of relations between Australia and the Netherlands in this Dirk Hartog Year, linking the old with the new.

We would like to thank HeadOn Director Moshe Rosenzveig, City of Sydney and Customs House for adding this touch of Dutch light to the HeadOn exhibition.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT)

On the 17th and 18th May 2016, UNESCO organised, with support of the Netherlands, an International Ministerial Meeting on Education Sector Responses to Violence based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. In under a decade, May the 17th has established itself the single most important date for LGBTI communities to mobilise on a worldwide scale.

The Day represented an annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, opinion leaders and local authorities to the alarming situation faced by lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people and all those who do not conform to majority sexual and gender norms.

The Netherlands has contributed to a UNESCO-project aimed at preventing homophobic bullying in education and at this Ministerial meeting,

that Minister Bussemaker (OCW) co-chaired, the first results were presented. Countries in Asia, Southern Africa and Latin America also contributed.

On this occasion, the first United Nations global report was launched on the status of education sector responses to this particular form of violence in schools and ministers will adopt a policy statement on this issue.

May the 17th is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal, with 1600 events reported from 1280 organisations in 2014. These mobilisations unite millions of people in support of the recognition of human rights for all, irrespective of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
