A big thank you to everyone who nominated and congratulations to all our final nominees!

The annual Equestrian WA Awards Night brings members together to celebrate the major achievements of our home-grown sports stars and luminaries from the equestrian sports of Dressage, Eventing, Endurance, Interschool, Jumping, Show Horse, Para-Equestrian and Vaulting. The Awards honour those who have made an outstanding contribution to the WA equestrian community as an athlete, coach, administrator, owner, club, event organiser or volunteer from both metropolitan and regional areas. We will also be acknowledging and celebrating Richard Sands, Sonja Johnson, Samantha Jones, Lucinda & Clayton Fredericks, Sharon Jarvis, Carol Wells, Mary Ipkendanz and Judy Hogan as well-deserving equestrian athletes who have demonstrated excellence at the highest standard in equestrian sport and will be awarding them Equestrian WA’s lifetime honorary membership at the awards.

We are pleased to host the 2018 Awards Night in the Grand Ballroom of The Westin which is ideally located on Hay Street, on the rejuvenated east end of Perth CBD.

Tickets are now on sale and will include a two-course gourmet meal and 4-hour drinks package (beer, wine and soft drinks). Drinks will be served from 6:30 pm. Dress is smart casual.

LILO FORE
International Masters of Dressage – The Stepping Stones to Collection

Dressage WA and DWA Judges Taskforce are proud to be hosting Lilo Fore, FEI 5*Dressage Judge - FEI 3* PE Judge - FEI YH Judge
for a series of events to be held at the SEC from the 30th January to the 5th February 2019.
Suitable for all dressage enthusiasts, supporters, riders and trainers to attend

Lilo has been an important part of the development of dressage around the world and has served as an International judge since 1990, officiating at major events throughout the world including the Olympic Games, World Cup Finals, World Young Horse Championships, Pan American Games and World Equestrian Games.

Lilo a FEI competitor, trainer, instructor and Sport Horse Breeder. Her farm, Sportshorse America, is based in Santa Rosa CA, where she has lived since moving from her native, Germany. Lilo’s involvement with USDF and USEF has proven instrumental in the development and promotion of dressage education in the United States. Those who read Dressage Today and other equestrian magazines will have seen her training articles in print, which give just a glimpse of her amazing knowledge and experience.

Lilo is committed to teaching riders the correct training principles, from the early days of training the young horse to the educated Grand Prix horse. Some of you may remember Lilo’s perspective of an instructor on the DVD 'On the Levels’, giving training tips for each movement of the dressage tests introduced to Australia in 2014. We hope to introduce some of our new tests during Lilo’s visit to benefit from her insight again.

Lilo has now retired from FEI judging but has maintained her Dressage, Young Horse and Sport Horse Breeding Judging in the US.

Lilo has a vast amount of experience as an international rider, coach and a judge which WA will benefit from. Take the opportunity to learn from someone who works with the overall development of the dressage horse and rider combination to create an optimum performance.

There is something for all dressage enthusiasts to get involved with whilst Lilo is here. You may want to take up one of the rider clinic packages; attend the EA Elementary level seminar - developing the first stages of collection, introducing lateral work, simple changes, counter canter; take a look at the EA FEI levels workshop - development of collection to GP; EA Coaches and Judges are invited to join the rider coaches educational clinic; or sit back and enjoy a special Masterclass with Lilo Fore. If you’re lucky maybe Santa will bring you a VIP ticket.

Come and meet Lilo, it’s an opportunity not to be missed. Her enthusiasm to help the sport and sense of humour is refreshing.

MARK TODD SECURES TOP HONOURS AT EQUESTRIAN IN THE PARK

Eventing legend Mark Todd rode away with the top honours at last weekend’s Equestrian in the Park, on board his catch ride off-the-track  Thoroughbred The Diamond Thief. The 8-year-old gelding, owned by Kate Joyce, wasn’t the most experienced of Mark’s rides, but under his expert guidance came out to give two fast and flawless rounds over the challenging course to secure the win and the brand new Ford SUV.

2018 SHOW HORSE “NATIONALS” WRAP

by Val Mayger

Well, that’s a wrap for the 2018 Australasian Show Horse and Rider Championships.

The WA Team is returning home knowing that it is the most successful team we have ever entered for the ‘Nationals’.

  • Champion Large Galloway Hunter – Broadwater Park Toy Soldier – Michelle Bowden
  • Reserve Champion Child’s Medium Hunter Pony – Gem Park Debonare – Jenna Hall
  • Reserve Champion Child’s Large Galloway – Argyl Fine Art – Orleans Graetz
  • Reserve Champion Medium Pony – Argyl Star Quality – Codie Lambert
  • Reserve Champion Medium Hunter Pony – Gem Park Debonare – Jenna Hall
  • Reserve Champion Senior Rider – Crystal Anderson
  • Second Runner-up Medium Hunter Pony – Silkwood Top Notch – Charlee Kennedy
  • Second Runner-up Small Hunter Galloway – Wynara Red Hot Special – Celeste Mills

We also had three fourth placings – Karma Park Fox Fire in the Child’s Small Hunter Galloway with Rhiarn Perks and Asharley Play on Words with Serena Smith in the Small Show Hunter Pony and the Leading Rein Show Hunter Pony ridden by Lauren Williams and led by Fiona Graetz.

As you can imagine, this success caused much excitement, and the WA Cheer Squad was in great voice. There were also a few tears around, particularly after Broadwater Park Toy Soldier’s win. This Galloway entered the ‘Nationals’ from Second Runner-up at the EWA Horse of the Year as Anna Johnson [First Runner up] was unable to compete.  He and Michelle came to Werribee determined to show that it was worth the gamble. They competed at the Show Horse Council of Victoria’s show on Saturday, prior to the Nationals and were judged Reserve Champions.  Michelle was determined to go one better if she possibly could – and she did.  They produced a beautiful workout which sealed the Championship for them.

Thank you to all team members for making the long trip to Werribee – some 4,000kms round trip.  Not only do they make the trip, at considerable expense, but their horses and ponies arrive in amazing condition and then perform brilliantly.

Thank you to Tenille Walters, our Team Manager, for her support and attention to Team Members. It is a very tiring and ‘full-on’ job being a Team Manager, and from the time Tenille accepted the position, she worked tirelessly to keep the team updated on the news from EVIC and to get better ‘deals’ for WA regarding practice times etc. Thank you, Tenille!

Thank you also to Fiona and Carsten Graetz.  Not only did they travel their four horses and ponies, plus another Team horse, to the ‘Nationals’ but they generously gave two of our competitors the ride on their lovely Carona Park Victory, for their respective Rider classes.  Crystal Anderson rode him for Reserve Champion in the Senior Rider, and Tyler Bain had a great ride in his Intermediate Rider class.  ‘Victory’ was very busy, he competed in four classes in all, producing great workouts in each class.

Morgan Lane designed an organised our uniforms, again, this year and we had some great compliments from the other States. They did look amazing Morgan, thank you. A big thank you, also, to SNOOZLE who sponsored our uniforms.

The Nationals, Queensland and WA all had the same manufacturer, and unfortunately, there was a problem in the shipping, and all three of us didn’t get our uniforms until Wednesday. Although this was disappointing, it was not due to any fault of the States who were affected.  Thank you, Morgan, they looked amazing!

Well, that’s it for 2018.  The ‘Nationals’ is a great way to wind up the competition year, and now we have the EWA Awards Night where we can celebrate all our successes.

Thanks to you all for making 2018 such a great year!
