SENATE HEARINGS IN FULL SWING
On August 4th, I attended the Joint Interim Committee to Study a Coastal Barrier System in Galveston. Panel experts have not yet agreed upon the best way to protect the Texas coast, but committee members were quick to direct them to make a decision and take swift action.

I also attended the Government Organization hearing on August 14th in Austin to discuss ways to improve state contracts and ways to do things better.

Additionally, I attended the Senate Finance Committee hearing on August 12th, also in Austin to get updates on the Texas economy going into the budget process for next session . As the budget process proceeds, more hearings will be held throughout the rest of the year.

Do not hesitate to contact my office if you would like information on how to submit your suggestions for our budget or on any ways Texas can do better.

EDUCATION STAKEHOLDERS NETWORKING EVENT
Over the summer we hosted networking events throughout the district to give principals, community partners, and other education stakeholders an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas. These events served as an opportunity not only for our office to strengthen our relationships with our local schools, but to also give our local schools access to government and community partners that they otherwise may not have. We plan on continuing the conversations in follow-up meetings as we prepare for the next legislative session. Please contact my office if you would like to take part in any of the next meetings.

SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM
Summer is almost over but there are still many children struggling to meet their daily nutritional needs. This does not need to happen, especially in a great city like Houston. For families who count on school breakfast and lunch, please be mindful that youth 18 years and younger can, and have been, receiving free summer meals at numerous locations throughout our community. Local partners provide the locations and staff to serve up to two meals a day. Families can find a site by visiting www.summerfood.org, texting FOOD to 877-877 or calling 211.

MESSAGE FROM SYLVIA

The summer season will be over soon. We all know what that means. Teachers, parents and students are all getting ready for school. For many this means getting immunizations, buying school supplies, uniforms and arranging car pools. For me it means kicking it into high gear and making sure that my team and I are ready as can be to fight for you this upcoming legislative session in January 2015. Quality education & access to health care are just a few investments that are at the top of my list. Your priorities are my priorities!

Putting People First,

Sylvia
