The Delta variant is currently driving the fourth wave, and Niagara saw more than 10 workplace outbreaks in September alone. This has required many employees to isolate as close contacts, disrupting business and impeding the economic recovery that so many businesses in Niagara need. From a workplace and community perspective, one of the best ways to protect against COVID-19 is through vaccinations. Vaccinated individuals are less likely to bring COVID-19 into the workplace and less likely to infect others if they do get sick. It is recommended that employers adopt and implement a workplace vaccination policy to increase vaccination rates and keep employees and customers as safe as possible. Although Niagara Region Public Health is not making this a requirement for local workplaces, it is hoped that voluntary efforts will further increase vaccination rates and prevent outbreaks and the spread of infection in workplaces. Additionally, it is recommended that workplaces share senior-level endorsement of vaccinations and encourage all employees to get vaccinated. Employers can support employee vaccinations in a variety of ways, including offering time off to get the vaccine. There are a number of great resources and tools available to help you learn more about vaccination policies, including information on human rights and how to develop an effective policy for your workplace.
