Weekend Road Closures in Downtown St. CatharinesAccording to blogTO, Downtown St. Catharines is the ultimate patio weekend getaway "Definitely a hidden gem!" St. Paul Street, between William Street and Carlisle Street, is closed to vehicular traffic on weekends so that restaurant patios can open onto the sidewalks and for the street itself to become a pedestrian walkway. Outdoor patios are open at a number of restaurants throughout the core and many are offering indoor seating with appropriate safety measures in place. While downtown to dine and stroll, please visit our many unique retail shops and services. You'll find live music downtown at some of the patios on the weekend, including the South St. Paul Beer Garden on St. Paul Street near William on late Sunday afternoon (weather permitting). Restaurants with outdoor seating are making things cozy with heaters and blankets. The lot at the corner of St. Paul & James Street has picnic tables where you can enjoy your take-out food order from any downtown restaurant. Keep safe and wear a face mask if you go indoors at public places. Downtown St. Catharines welcomes you to our safe and welcoming outdoor zone. The hours for this weekend's street closure are: Friday October 2 3:00pm to 11:00pm Saturday October 3 10:00am to 11:00pm Sunday October 4 10:00am to 9:00pm CURBSIDE PICKUP: Free short-term parking spots (15 minutes) are available on St. Paul Street, Queen Street, James Street, and on weekends in the parking lot located at 135 St. Paul Street (accessible by Summer Street). Look for the Free Curbside Parking signs. To avoid having your car towed, please do not park on St. Paul Street during the times of the weekend street closure. Free parking is available Monday through Friday after 6pm and all day on weekends at downtown parking meters, municipal parking lots and two downtown parking garages. DOWNTOWN EVENTS In 2020, Culture Days has been expanded to one month and activities will be led either online or in-person with social distancing and enhanced cleaning considerations. Participants will be given the opportunity to get creative, get messy, engage with performances, make art and experience culture! St. Catharines Culture and the St. Catharines Downtown Association present two Collaborative Community Mural Projects in October. October 3 and 4, 11am to 2pm, Join local artist Mathew Vizbulis to create a collaborative community mural "Shipman's Paint by Numbers". Alley wall beside 200 St. Paul Street. October 17 and 18, 11am to 2pm, join local artist Melani Pyke to create a collaborative community mural "Furry Friends". Parking lot wall beside 27 James Street. Don't miss the Harvest Celebration at the Farmers Market, 91 King Street, on Saturday October 3. A special discovery table will feature the best of the fall harvest, take home crafts for families, food information, take home recipes cards and more. Stay to watch a Culture Days special performance with the Hummingbird Steel Drum Band. Be sure to also check out the Pumpkinville Market Takeover on October 3 and October 17, with a touchless family photo booth and colouring pages for one of two online Pumpkinville contests at EngageSTC.ca/Pumpkinville FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in Downtown St. Catharines has a number of virtual upcoming events this month, including the Niagara Regional Native Centre's (Virtual) PowWow on October 4, Gord's Legacy - A Virtual Experience to Honour Gord Downie on October 17, and the St. Catharines Arts Awards on October 25. The Niagara Leadership Summit for Women is a virtual event this year, taking place on October 20 to 22. Listen, learn and connect with women leaders within the Niagara Region and discover how you too are a leader. Together, we can lift up the women in our lives through our different and meaningful leadership roles. Hosted by the YWCA Niagara Region. Niagara Folk Arts Festival has a unique offering this month, Foods to the Folks. If you missed tasting genuine homemade foods with the 2020 Open Houses postponement, these pop-up takeouts are going fill that need. Between October 16 and October 30, their ethno-cultural Clubs will be offering their cultural specialties for take-out. Carousel Players presents a socially distanced Hallowe'en Happening for the whole family, taking place inside Robertson Theatre at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre on October 30 and 31. Families must pre-register at staggered arrival times to maintain distance. Sophisticated stage lighting, projections, and sound effects will transform the space into a mysterious world full of delightful Hallowe’en surprises.
