Making SH33 safer

Story
Story

State Highway 33 between Te Ngae Junction and Paengaroa is classified as a high-risk rural road for a reason. 16 people have died and 46 have been seriously injured between 2006 and 2015.

Safety improvements are planned to start later this year and will provide a safer road for all people driving this important link.

The open days held in February were a great success and we’d like to say thank you to those who came along and provided feedback.

Approximately 230 people attended and we received over 180 completed feedback forms. Your main safety concerns for this stretch of road were:

  1. Traffic is going too fast through Okere
    Falls, Mourea and Paengaroa.
  2. It’s unsafe to cross the road at Okere
    Falls.
  3. Some drivers aren’t following the speed
limit and they’re taking too many risks.
  4. Getting stuck behind slow vehicles is
frustrating and other drivers are making
    unsafe passing manoeuvres.
  5. Some parts of the road are quite windy
and it’s unclear how much to slow down
    for the corners.

Your feedback has helped us to evaluate which options will work best to make this stretch of SH33 safer for everyone.

What's happening, and when?

Since the open days, the team has been reviewing your valuable feedback and looking at the best options to improve safety on SH33. The rural towns of Paengaroa, Mourea and Okere Falls highlighted some challenges, so we have been meeting with local community groups and businesses over these past few months to discuss the issues in more detail.

We will soon have the preferred safety improvements for SH33 ready to present to the community.

We’re planning community drop in sessions mid-October where you can see the planned improvements, let us know if we have missed anything important and speak to the Safe Roads team. The dates, times and locations of these events will be advertised in our next newsletter.

After the community drop ins and, all going to plan, some preliminary work will start before Christmas (this will include road widening) and we are planning to have the main safety improvement work underway early 2018.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or thoughts please don’t hesitate to contact our Community Engagement Manager, Justin Rae, justin.rae@saferoads.co.nz or 021 390 732.
