From everyone at Healthway, we wish you a healthy, and happy festive season! Our 30-year milestoneIn 2021 we will be celebrating 30 years of creating a healthy and active WA. Across the year we will share grant stories through our website, social media channels and newsletters. These stories will highlight the people, projects, and partnerships that have made a difference to the health and wellbeing of so many Western Australians.Healthy Venues GrantsEarlier this month we launched our new Healthy Venues Grants program at Swan Active Beechboro. Eligible venues can apply for funding of up to $5,000 per food and drink outlet, to implement a range of strategies to promote and increase access to healthier food and drink. Summer sporting club grantsOur Healthy Sporting Club Summer 2020 grants have been announced with $80,179 to be shared among 26 local sporting clubs. The funding will help to transform club canteens into healthier environments for children, families, and the local community to enjoy. Find out more. Healthy half-timesA survey of 200 people was undertaken by KANTAR in September this year to help us better understand the availability of food and drink during junior sporting games. Coaches, parents, and others were asked about the availability of unhealthy food and drinks, including lollies and sugary drinks. The results will be used to identify opportunities for Healthway to work with sporting groups to support healthier food and drink choices. A summary of these findings is available on our website. Creating art the awesome wayPresented by Go for 2&5 the Awesome Arts Creative Challenge is an artist-in-residence program supported by Healthway. Artists Jodie Davidson and Addam recently visited children in Parnngurr - a remote Pilbara community. Children explored weaving, wire work, sculpture, and plaster casts of hands to learn about healthy eating and share thoughts on their community. Find out more. Champions Cup a slam dunkWe work in partnership with Basketball WA to deliver a range of activities including the the Smarter than Smoking Fuelling Champions School Slam Series program. Across the program this year, 1,637 primary school students participated. The Champions Cup saw 277 kids representing 22 primary schools from across WA showcase their skills and teamwork. Image: COVID-19 in Western Australia Bulletin 1: The impact on lifestyle COVID-19 in WA bulletinTo better understand the impact of COVID-19 control measures on the WA population, Healthway provided support for the WA Department of Health to survey more than 600 adults aged 16 and over about changes to their lifestyle during COVID-19, as part of the Health and Wellbeing Surveillance System. The findings have been presented in the two bulletins below:New Alcohol GuidelinesThe National Health and Medical Research Council released new national guidelines for reducing the health risks from drinking alcohol. The guidelines are the result of four years of an extensive review of the evidence on the harms and benefits of drinking alcohol. They replace the previous version, published in 2009. Find out more. Local Governments and public healthThe Cancer Council WA has just released a new resource to help Local Governments take action to improve the health and wellbeing of their local communities. The environments in which we live, work, play, and learn can support and encourage healthy behaviours. Find out more. Propel Youth Arts WA Grants Propel Youth Arts WA is offering grants of up to $4000 to support creative art projects from young people aged 12-26 years. Funded activities could include live music events, creative workshop series, professional development forums, festivals, exhibitions, or publishing of magazines. The program is supported by Healthway to promote the Drug Aware message. Find out more. Caretaker period 2021 The Western Australian State Election will be held on Saturday 13 March 2021. In line with other state public sector agencies Healthway and Lotterywest will assume a caretaker role from early February 2021, and follow the guidelines which will be issued at the commencement of the caretaker period. During the caretaker period, we will continue to receive and assess grant funding applications, however funding decisions will be deferred until after the caretaker period has ended.
