Hurricane Florence:
Give. Serve. Pray.

OPC Disaster Response has determined to mobilize a hurricane relief effort in North Carolina, in particular to address the needs of 6 flooded OPC homes in New Bern, and 6 flooded OPC homes in Wilmington.

Regional Disaster Response Coordinator Tim Hopper has provided daily, detailed reports on the work in North Carolina at Facebook. The disaster response crew that came together to work with him in the immediate aftermath of the storm did tremendous work.

We are now ready to make a national call for volunteers, and are prepared to receive donations. The cost of gutting a flood damaged homes and rebuilding will be substantial, and we encourage you to give as your are able.

From Tim Hopper's Sept. 20, 2018, Post on Facebook

SUMMARY:
The Diaconal Committee of the Presbytery of the Southeast, the OPC Committee on Diaconal Ministries, and the officers of local churches Covenant OPC, Heritage OPC, and Trinity OPC, decided today to formalize a disaster recovery effort in Wilmington and New Bern.

THE DELAY:
We wanted to be sure there was a significant need before accepting donations and asking volunteers to travel to the North Carolina coast. However, it has now become clear that several homes of members of our churches received substantial flood damage. Moreover, as the extent of the damage to these communities has become evident, we see many opportunities to serve the extended family of church members and the neighborhoods of our church buildings.

GETTING ORGANIZED:
An organized recovery effort is not a small undertaking. We have been working this week to find a site coordinator (for overseeing recovery projects), local volunteer coordinators (for working with the site coordinator to understand volunteer needs), a regional volunteer coordinator (to work with the PSE PDC and OPC CDM to recruit volunteers), and local hospitality coordinators (to ensure volunteers are housed and fed while in eastern NC). We are particularly excited that the Lord has provided a local site coordinator who has a background in mitigation of water and mold damage!

L.W.: Thank you so much for helping C. get this work done on her house - you have indeed been the hands and feet of Jesus to her.

N.R.: Thank you so much for checking on our home. We are resting easier now knowing what's going on and what to expect when we come back. Praying for your safety.
