From Tim Hopper's Sept. 20, 2018, Post on Facebook
SUMMARY:
The Diaconal Committee of the Presbytery of the Southeast, the OPC Committee on Diaconal Ministries, and the officers of local churches Covenant OPC, Heritage OPC, and Trinity OPC, decided today to formalize a disaster recovery effort in Wilmington and New Bern.
THE DELAY:
We wanted to be sure there was a significant need before accepting donations and asking volunteers to travel to the North Carolina coast. However, it has now become clear that several homes of members of our churches received substantial flood damage. Moreover, as the extent of the damage to these communities has become evident, we see many opportunities to serve the extended family of church members and the neighborhoods of our church buildings.
GETTING ORGANIZED:
An organized recovery effort is not a small undertaking. We have been working this week to find a site coordinator (for overseeing recovery projects), local volunteer coordinators (for working with the site coordinator to understand volunteer needs), a regional volunteer coordinator (to work with the PSE PDC and OPC CDM to recruit volunteers), and local hospitality coordinators (to ensure volunteers are housed and fed while in eastern NC). We are particularly excited that the Lord has provided a local site coordinator who has a background in mitigation of water and mold damage!
