Celebrating the end of Term with Foundation Fortnight

Despite the challenges of the past few months, students have graduated, firsts have been earned, and we've even held a virtual Finalists' Ceremony. And to cap it all off, we held two weeks of celebrations in honour of our 55th anniversary. Alumni and members from around the world Zoomed, quizzed and toasted along with students and staff from the Alumni & Development Office. Read about the events and the President's special message on our website.

College Life

The College has set up a number of task forces so that we can carefully plan a safe and gradual return for our students and staff. We have already welcomed back some postgraduate and Graduate Course in Medicine students, the Coffee Bar and the Bar have reopened with social distancing guidelines, and some staff are coming into College. We are preparing to welcome back our wider Wolfson community very shortly. As always, you can find out the latest guidance on our website.

The Global Health Hub presented a fascinating  panel discussion and Q&A on COVID-19 and me.

Launch of new Interdisciplinary Research Hubs

This month saw the launch of an exciting new research initiative: three interdisciplinary research hubs. Fellows and students joined together to discuss global challenges that call for multidisciplinary solutions and encourage the linking of creative people with different skills and perspectives. Keep an eye out for details of events and opportunities to get involved with Sustainability & Conservation, Global Health, and Gender.

Wolfson alumnus keeps it in the family

What a treat it was to greet alumnus Professor Stephen Hodkinson at College recently. Stephen was here to pick up his daughter Joy's belongings (she's followed the family tradition and is a second-year medic; Stephen's wife Hilary is also an alumna!)
Stephen was able to have a socially distanced tour, chat archaeology with Head of Catering Charles Correa and enjoy some of Loredana's fine coffee. Stephen is an eminent authority on Sparta and contributed to our (Ancient) Warfare Wednesday series, which you can
watch again on the website

Professor Stephen Hodkinson and Junior Research Fellow Dr Cezary Kucewicz, convener of the Warfare Wednesday series.

Take a virtual tour around the College gardens with Acting Head Gardener Oscar Holgate, who describes how different areas in the garden contribute to the mental health and wellbeing of students and staff alike.

WOLFSON IN THE MEDIA

Recognised for directorial debut

Adedamọla Laoye (HSPS, 2017) is getting noticed! We were thrilled to see his directorial debut at last year's The Convert at the ADC theatre, and of course he manages the ever-popular Wolfson Howler. Now he's featured in The Guardian's Nigerian edition, who say, "We are undoubtedly witnessing the emergence of a someone to watch."

Emeritus Fellow Brian Moore

Emeritus Fellow Professor Brian Moore has been a Senior Member, then a Fellow of Wolfson since early in the College's history. He is renowned for his work in audiology, hearing loss and the development of hearing aids.
Now the magazine Canadian Audiologist has devoted a special issue "to celebrate and fete the life and work of Dr Brian Moore".

The pandemic hit very close to home when we heard that Fellow Paul Mylrea, Head of Communications for the University, was hospitalised with COVID-19. Fortunately he has recovered, but not without some lingering effects from two significant strokes. He shared his experience with the BBC.

FROM THE ALUMNI & DEVELOPMENT OFFICE

If you visited College earlier this year you might have seen the Ideals in Action exhibition just outside the Dining Hall. It tells the story of the College's founding and its first years. Matthias Wong (PhD, History, 2015) worked with Frieda Midgeley (Archivist and Record Manager) to put together this exhibition, some of which we are now delighted to share with you online.

New Press Fellowship Scholarship

The Wolfson College Commonwealth Journalists Association/Derek Ingram Fellowship was recently established in honour of the long and distinguished career of Derek Ingram and his outstanding work as a journalist. Read more.

And finally...

As this term draws to a close, we look back on what turned out to be an unexpectedly busy time – with digital events in place of real-life events we have “virtually” met more people than ever before and from many continents.

We are now looking forward to autumn and a new normality, considering how to do events safely. Whilst virtual events will remain central to our programme for the foreseeable future, keep an eye on the website and your inbox for the latest news.

Supporting the Wolfson community is always at the forefront of our minds and in recent months our Fundraising Appeal has drawn a staggering response from alumni, friends, members, staff and students. Over 190 people have given gifts of all amounts and we can’t thank you enough for your generosity and for the many heartfelt messages at a time when there will have been so many calls on your support. Gifts are still coming in so we’re keeping the Appeal open for a few more weeks – you can find out more here.

Watch out for news over the summer about how the money is being spent both in support of students and to keep the College safe.

Please keep in touch, send in your news and keep your details up to date online.
