Dear Regent families, Welcome to this final edition of the Regent Digest for 2016. On the Christian calendar, this period preceding Christmas is known as Advent. It is a time leading us toward Christmas day, commencing the fourth Sunday prior. During Advent, it is an opportunity to wait and expect, just as the people awaited the arrival of the Saviour to come; and a reminder that we are waiting for Christ's second Advent, or arrival. As we wait, we can position ourselves to consider the weightiness that Christmas actually deserves - that is, that God would step down from perfection and infinity to meet us. Something definitely worth considering, and then celebrating! INVITATION. Families are invited to join at Riverview Church for a one hour spectacular Christmas Experience of music, story, media and inspiration. Celebrate with us the magic, the wonder, the joy and the hope of Christmas! Tickets are essential and can be booked now HERE. On behalf of College staff, I would like to thank the many family helpers who have faithfully and enthusiastically assisted in different ways around the College; including, supporting in classes, on excursions, P&F and the Canteen. Both you and your support are greatly appreciated. 2016 has been a wonderful year for learning and relationships at Regent. I would like to acknowledge the dedication, expertise and skill of all staff, who understand and demonstrate on a daily basis, the importance and significance of their work and the precious young lives they speak into. I would like to mention Mr Clint Tracy will be taking leave next year to enjoy his growing family and pray that it would be a time of joy and celebration, as a new son or daughter is welcomed. Finally, please note the key dates as outlined below. Looking Ahead to 2017, there will be several new opportunities and experiences on offer for both students and families. It should be a terrific year! Until then, as a College we pray your family enjoys rest and peace. Merry Christmas and God bless, Derek Nicholls. Principal.

SEMESTER 2 REPORTS Reports will be distributed this Friday, 9th December. The report pack will also include class placements (the student's class title and teacher name) for 2017. KINDERGARTEN Christmas time is always a special and busy time of the year. Learning about the Nativity, the reason for the season, making crafts, giving presents, singing Christmas carols.. and the list goes on! The students have been working on their Christmas crafts and gifts for their parents. From the Kindergarten staff, thank you parents for a great year and entrusting your precious little ones into our care. We have loved teaching them and are always thankful for time spent with them and seeing them grow into who God wants them to be. Have a great Christmas and 2017! Mrs Balarakishnan and Mrs Huxley.
PRE-PRIMARY & YEAR ONE Last fortnight, the Pre-primary students joined the current Year 1 classes for a morning, as a way of readying themselves for 2017. Each Pre-primary student had a Year 1 buddy who showed them around the classroom and school, telling them everything they need to know about Year 1. After reading a story, the Year 1 students helped their Pre-Primary buddies to write and draw a picture about the book. The Pre-primaries left feeling very proud of their Year 1 work, and the Year 1s loved having them visit and being the ‘teachers’! The Year 1s have been busily preparing for Christmas by setting up and decorating the tree in the quadrangle. Students made sparkly baubles and beaded Christmas Trees to hang as decorations. Pre-primary and Year 1 teachers. CLASS 2.1 Last Wednesday the Year Two students completed their Science topic by constructing tracks and mazes for their Darkling beetles to travel through. They enjoyed constructing their tracks and watching their beetles race. Mrs Jenkins. CLASS 2/3 and 3.1 “Mangia Mangia” and Merry Christmas! Recently, the Year 2/3 & Year 3 class made their own Italian booklets called “Mangia Mangia” based on a book they learnt in Italian. They read them to the Year 1's. In the booklet, the students included a 'treat' food of their choice. They then give that food to their pet (without Mum knowing). Buona letter. Bravo! Our Year 3 science topic was HEAT and we conducted many investigations to learn more about heat. Some of our questions were; Why does a metal spoon get hot and a wooden spoon does not if it is placed in hot water? How does heat transfer? What is an insulator? What is a conductor? We used thermometers to test how water reacts in different temperatures. Students conducted virtual experiments using a program to design and test how energy from the sun can be used to create a solar oven. Although we burned some foods, we successfully cooked pizza and meringue. Well done! The final assembly was our nativity play, written by Mrs Ellis, based on the perspective of the Little Drummer Boy. Students sang beautifully, spoke confidently and performed cooperatively. A wonderful finale to the school year. Merry Christmas everyone. Mrs Ellis, Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs Innes. CLASS 3.1 Last week we concluded our Immigration theme with a fantastic international Tea Party! Lots of our parents joined us and we had a feast of foods from many different cultures represented in our classes. In Art, we designed our own glasses to help us to 'see something from another person's perspective' and made us think about what it would be like to be a refugee or a person leaving their homeland, to move to a new country. Part of our Christmas art was to make a material collage of the Three Kings. This beautiful example was made by Sohee. Mrs Innes. CLASS 4.1 Q 1. Is a square a rectangle? Class 4.1 have recently been investigating the language and properties of 2D shapes in order to answer this and many other riddles. For example, what is the name of a quadrilateral with pairs of opposite sides that are parallel and equal and has no right angles? (Q 2.) We have also drawn and created fraction notation and decimal numbers of tenths and hundredths with solid objects, such as MAB’s, 1 cm blocks and 1m paper tape measures. In preparation for our recent assembly, we calculated how much cheaper it is to buy food in bulk rather than packaged in individual serving sizes. We discovered that you not only save money but you also have less rubbish to throw away or recycle which helps our environment. Next year, as Year 5s, we hope to continue impacting our fellow students’ choices to work towards the whole school having Waste Wise lunch boxes. Also for our assembly we made percussion instruments from recyclable materials and played them to accompany our singing of Hawk Nelson’s Live Like Your Loved. We used the same instruments to arrange our own music in small groups and performed our pieces for assessment in Music with Mrs Marshall. As the year draws to a close we look forward to sharing our Secret Santa gifts and performing some items in our Year Four’s Got Talent presentation at our class party in Week 9. We want to thank all of our parents for supporting us throughout the year and a special thank you to the many parents who have helped on our excursions. Thank you SO much for helping make 2016 such a fantastic year. Mrs Johnston. ATHLETICS On Friday the 18th of November, Regent College participated in the WACSSA (Western Australian Christian Schools Sporting Association) Athletics Track Event. All students demonstrated great courage and participated as hard as they could. Regent had three champions awarded -
Another outstanding result was the Year 5 and Year 4 boys relay team winning their event. Well done to all the Regent athletes. Also, thank you to the parents and staff who assisted either on the throw and jumps day or track day, it was greatly appreciated! Mrs French. REGENT RUN CLUB Thanks to the students involved in the Regent Run Club 2016, for their dedication and continual improvement in their running. PROJECT On Saturday 21st November, a group of enthusiastic ELC parents and staff met from 8am in the ELC to participate in a busy bee. The parent initiated project involved a variety of tasks, with the end result a much brighter and interesting play space. While some finishing-off still needs to occur, the College extends a significant thank you to those involved in both the planning and 'hands-on' stages. A great picture of community, with some parents working through past 5pm on a 37 degree day! Thank you to the P&F for their financial support of this project. ELC CONCERT Thank you to all the parents and families that attended the Kindergarten and Pre-primary Christmas Concert. I think all that were there would agree the students did an amazing job! Their confidence while singing and dancing was outstanding. Well done Kindergarten and Pre-primary. CHOIR ENSEMBLE. This afternoon, a group of 21 students attended the Victoria Park Library to perform for a group of volunteers. The local volunteers support those in the community to have access to reading material, both in hard form and electronically. The students performed beautifully and represented the College very well. Thank you to Mrs Marshall for coordinating. |
