PREPARING FOR HURRICANE SEASON

Hurricane Season is on its way – It is critical to learn about hurricanes and hurricane preparedness. To be safe this Hurricane Season, I encourage you to develop a family/household emergency plan in case of an evacuation. This can include a kit of important supplies such as medication, non-perishable food items and water. If state or local officials order a mandatory evacuation – leave immediately. If you are elderly or disabled and need evacuation assistance, please call 2-1-1. For information on evacuation routes and road conditions call (800) 452-9292. CAFE CON SYLVIA IN SOUTH HOUSTON

On June 13th,  I am hosting a Café con Sylvia in South Houston. These informal “coffees” are a great way for me to stay connected with constituents, and for you to learn more about state government. LITE UP TEXAS

Summer is upon us and that means higher electricity bills as we try to stay cool. The System Benefit Fund Low Income Discount Program, known as LITE-UP Texas, provides an electricity rate discount of up to 82 percent for qualifying low-income customers during the months of May, June, July and August. You may already be automatically enrolled in LITE-UP Texas if you currently receive Medicaid or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). If not, you can still qualify for LITE-UP Texas if your annual household income is at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty guidelines (or up to $29,813 for a family of four). A MESSAGE FROM SYLVIA

The 2015 legislative session has concluded! It was a tough 6 months full of ups and downs, but I am proud of what our team accomplished. Please know that every bill that we passed would not have been possible without the unbelievable support of SD6 constituents. Look for more details on our successes in the weeks to come.

Now that I am done in Austin, I am scheduling a series of town hall meetings and “coffees” throughout the district to discuss new state policies with residents of SD6. I will also be attending many of the civic club events and senior meetings that I have missed because of the session. I look forward to visiting with you all over the next few months! They say “home is where the heart is”, and while I may have been in Austin, my heart never left our community!
