Key Messages Week 6 - Term 3Year 9 Refugee Immersion Program ‘A Wake-up Call in Empathy’ This week our Year 9 students participated in the JPC Refugee Immersion Program - ‘A Wake-up Call in Empathy’. The program offers a hands-on experience for our students, allowing them to step outside their comfort zones to glimpse the experience of others. The Immersion, now in its fifth year of operation, is unique to our College and challenges our students to consider their place in a global society. The opportunity to consider what it means to respond to the ever-increasing crisis of displacement facing people in our world is of vital significance for these young people, who will, in just a few short years, be able to play a pivotal role in electing the leaders of our country. Our hope is that experiences such as these will help us to produce citizens who are compassionate to the needs of others, and able to make informed decisions about the responsibilities we all share in seeking to build a more just and fair Australian society. Our Year 9 students are commended for their courage in tackling the program with such enthusiasm, and for embracing this opportunity enormous positivity. Special thanks must go to the significant number of teachers – Mrs. Haines, Miss Allen, Miss McCallum, Dr. Cleary, Mr. Johns, Mr. Pettit, Miss Swart, Miss Amos, Miss Reid, Mrs. Rowley, Mr. Wood, and Mr. Whatman – who led small groups on camp, facing the “elements” with their students and assuming their roles so effectively. I thank each of you for your generosity of time, and diligent care of our students during the experience. I would also like to thank the parents of our Year 9 students who have supported this Immersion program through enabling their young people to participate. Events of this nature are only successful because of the embrace of the community, and I thank you for sharing this journey with us. Mrs. Nicola Edghill Leader of Learning and Wellbeing Getting Active! Now that winter is nearly over and the weather is warming up, it is time to get our kids active again for at least 60 minutes each day. We all know exercise helps with developing muscle growth, improving cardiovascular capacity, keeping bones strong and maintaining a steady, healthy weight; but did you know regular exercise can also help your child with improving their psychological wellbeing? Exercise can help:
Kids and teenagers should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. Remember, physical activity doesn’t all have to happen at the one time. It can be accumulated throughout the day. Walking or riding to school, walking the family dog, being involved in activities at school, active play at home or taking part in organised sport after school or on weekends are great ways to help our kids get their 60 minutes of exercise. The Wellbeing Team Headspace Wellbeing Workshop Do you think you (or your child) would benefit from attending a practical skills session, run by a qualified Headspace professional, to learn about stress and anxiety management? Students will discover strategies to manage stress and school workload, manage mental health concerns and will look into strategies for dealing with anxiety. Headspace is all about fostering environments where you feel free and comfortable to be yourself. You will be able to learn about mental health challenges and ways to maintain a healthy headspace. These sessions will be broken up into a junior and a senior session. The Junior sessions are catered towards or year 7, 8 and 9 students, while our senior sessions are aimed at our students in years 10, 11 and 12. These sessions will be running during ILT on Thursday of week 7 period 1 for our junior session and period 2 for our senior session. You will need to enter the excursion room into your planner and write that you are attending the Wellbeing Workshop. The room is to be confirmed. Spaces are limited so it will be first in best dressed! To register for this event, you will need to express your interest to you PC teacher, who will record your name in their pastoral folder. Once the maximum numbers have been reached, the sign up sheet will be removed from the folder. Fleur Greaney Survey - How does your child travel to school? Following on from last week's Wellbeing message about the car park and bus bay at the end of the school day, we ask if you could please complete a quick survey (see link below) about how your child/children travel to/from school. The survey will only take 2 minutes of your time. Many thanks for your cooperation. Paul McKie ACT Children and Young People Review Have you participated in the ACT Children and Young Person Review yet? Your voice is the most important! Brad, one of the hospitality teachers took us on a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of their many large kitchens and training rooms, where we met the trainee chefs and watched them preparing our lunch. It was very interesting to compare their systems with ours and overall we found it very encouraging. The menu included fish cakes, dumplings, fish and beef mains, chocolate ganache tart and an interesting reconstructed carrot cake (favourite dish). The front of house Maitre de trainer was impressively scary and I’m sure our students came away feeling grateful for their relatively sweet, kind JPC hospitality staff! This was all accomplished in only 2 ILT periods (1 of which was their designated hospitality session, and students completed a comprehensive worksheet based on their observations and questions asked throughout the visit. The student's behaviour was exemplary and their commitment to this subject through participation impressive. Thank you as always to Megan Hadjuk for her dedication to helping us strive for improvement and excellence. Annie Daley Cafeteria Cuisine Catch-Up ( A student update on the wonderful foods coming out of our Cafeteria at JPC) This week I have really enjoyed the recess offerings at the Cafeteria and had a Raspberry Muffin, which was particularly tasty. It was a nice balance of fluffy cake with the sweetness of real (and fresh) raspberries. I enjoyed this and found it difficult to eat it all myself as my friends were keen on getting a taste- they sold out very quickly! I also had the chance to eat quesadilla which is a fancy grilled wrap! This one had been filled with beef mince, kidney beans, and really tasty vegetables. It certainly hit all the basic food groups and was most filling. I really enjoy the variety that is on offer at our cafeteria and how fresh and tasty everything is !! Shakira KEIR, Year 7 WANTED: Ties! Do you have any ties you no longer wear that are clogging up your cupboard space? The ties will be put to good use for a Year 12 Textiles project. We wish them luck and know they will represent our school community well. David Johns Sport ASC Boys Basketball
On Monday 26th of August, JPC sent 3 teams of boys the compete at the ASC Basketball Competition, Year 7/8, Year 9/10 and Year 11/12. All the teams conducted themselves fantastically on the day and represented JPC very well. This was the first year that JPC was represented in the Year 11 and 12 competition as our team, primarily made up of Year 11 players, battled hard against some very strong opposition. Despite not achieving a win on the day, the boys played very well and can walk away extremely proud of their efforts. Our 9/10 Boys started the day in a very tough pool, playing Daramalan to a close win and St Edmunds to a close loss. With our day closing with a back-to-back against Trinity College and Marist, the boys rallied to tie the Trinity game with some last-second heroics off a buzzer beating 3-point shot. Marist proved too strong however and the boys missed out on the Semi Finals. Overall, it was a fantastic day with the boys showing incredible teamwork and fantastic play. The day belonged to the Year 7/8 team though as they had a dream run through the pool stage, remaining undefeated into the semifinal game. In a tough semi-final, we played a good Burgmann team, eventually overcoming them to move onto the grand final. In the championship game, we were matched against an extremely strong Marist team. Marist had won the last 4 ASC competitions in the Year 7/8 and proved to be a very tough contest. In a nail-biting affair, the boys overcame Marist, winning by just 1 point, taking the ASC championship. Truly an outstanding effort from the team who displayed tremendous teamwork throughout the entire competition. I would like to congratulate every player who came along on the day, they represented JPC exceptionally on and off the court. A big thank you also goes out to the parents and guardians for transporting the players to and from the venue and supporting the boys as they played. Thank you also, to Ashlee Turner and Samuel Martyn who volunteered their time to make the day such a great success. Rohan Duddy A Valiant Effort but Just Short... Report from the Year 7/8 Boys' Football/Soccer Team. On an overcast day with cold blustery winds, seventeen boys from Years 7 & 8 represented JPC at the Finals of the SSACT Soccer Gala Day. The day was Thursday 29 August, the venue Dickson Playing Fields, and the results were mixed but ultimately disappointing. Our first game was exceptional. We produced a red-hot performance and were comfortable winners against St Mary MacKillop College. Whilst they scored two goals, we doubled that. Dinesh Pachhai produced a lovely goal and Ashton Antioch also contributed with a brilliant goal. However, special credit goes to Josh Milicevic who scored two classy goals. Our second game was not our best effort. We experimented with our positions and were perhaps overly confident. Ultimately, our opponents Stromlo High School were too good for us. They played very well, especially considering they had consecutive games with no rest before meeting us. Stromlo HS won 2-0. Our third game was against St Francis Xavier College. It was a must-win affair for us. The boys definitely showed a hunger to win and played with great intensity, for which they must be congratulated. However, it just was not our day. We were the recipients of some questionable refereeing which saw our goal disallowed and a free-kick just outside the box not quite following the laws of the game. SFX continued the pressure & quality play, eventually winning 1-0. This meant we were equal second in our pool and were in an undesirable position where we needed other games to go a certain way for us to advance but this was not to be. As well as our three goal scorers, the rest of the team produced a strong effort of which they should be proud. They are Ethan Russell, Nicholas Colquhoun, Matteo Vardanega, Dylan Bonifacio, Hayden Mortimer, Ashton Antioch, Dom Pelle, Hayden Gardiner, Luke Hewitt, Braydon Dunbar, Giuseppe Boccuzzo, Finn Rodda, Cooper Pfeiffer, Luka Galovic & Tanatswa Bvirakare. I would also like to thank Ms Jess Amos for her preparation leading up to the event, as well as her wonderful contribution on match day. Mr. Giuseppe Battaglia
Careers ADFA Open Day Saturday 24 August Open days are designed for students to see what they could do in the next level of their schooling. Australian Defence Force Academy takes that one step further by showing specific pathways and courses that can be developed. For example, the Computing and Cyber Security UNSW degree can lead to piloting, intelligence officer and other officer specialisation positions. On this open day, they showcased remote piloting (drones), simulated strikes and a simulated helicopter and armour personnel carrier section assault. These events/activities show what students can do in the Australian Defence Force. ADFA offers this, “Receive service training while studying for your degree, earn a salary while learning, and graduate with a rewarding job and no HELP debt.” The point of this open day is for a student to see what their future could be.
