Our very own #MardiGrasMoment!

Oxford Street, 5 March 2016

The Consulate-General participated with its very own Dutch float, the “Flaming Dutchman”. Over 60 enthusiastic Dutch & Australian volunteers joined this Dutch float, wearing bright orange shirts, representing the national colour of the Netherlands and marched with pride.

The Flying Dutchman float not only symbolised the Dutch support to advocate LGBTQI rights in Australia, it also has a significant link to the historic Dutch-Australian ties – namely the first recorded European land fall on Western Australian soil by the Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog in 1616, this year exactly 400 years ago. To underline this year’s special significance in a Mardi Gras fashion, the slogan of the float was ‘The Dutch: 400 Years of Cruising the World’.

This is the first time that the Consulate-General participated in the LGBTQI Mardi Gras parade in Sydney – and it was a fantastic evening!

We would like to thank Jo Ritzen and the other academics for the interesting evening, where we learned a lot about academic international collaboration!

ProRail has experience in increasing freight capacity on the dense Dutch rail network, and Hans-Peter was therefore invited to present these best practices at the Australian Logistics Forum in Sydney last week. He also elaborated on the way the Dutch use freight transport by rail to reach large multimodal terminals within and outside of the Netherlands, which led to a lot of interest amongst the Australian audience.
