Newsletter February 2020

2020 is here and we look forward to a new decade of exciting technology developments. This month's newsletter includes an update on Optix, a paper covering the topic of antimicrobial coatings, and information on Gencoa's worldwide network of agents and sales representatives.

Optix

We have now established large component stocks for the new Optix partial pressure product. This is a product enhancement that provides accurate gas partial pressure calculation as well as wide range pressure measurement and automatic switch on/shut-off at 0.5 mbar pressure.

The customer response has been fantastic. The new software and hardware elements have refined the ease of use and data processing/visualisation. The old Optix unit will not be available as we will be only offering this enhanced product. Upgrades are available.

Optix will be at the SVC in Chicago in April, where Dr Joe Brindley will talk about Optix and 'machine learning' in a main session, and Patricia Killen about Optix real-time, auto-identification of any chemical species. We hope to see many of you there and a list of all of Gencoa's presentations will be in the March Newsletter.

Antimicrobial coatings

'Don't touch that surface' is the title of a talk being given next month by Dermot Monaghan at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN). The talk covers antimicrobial surface coating technology which presents a new area of opportunity for sputtered coatings. Gencoa have developed a range of coatings that all provide extremely high levels of microbial killing action – effectively self-cleaning surfaces.

Sputtering is well-suited to tune the composition and topography of such layers to make them an ideal killing ground for microbes. Different families of coatings can combine the self-cleaning action with both hardness/wear resistance, high transparency or different colours.

With China battling to contain the Coronavirus and cases of the virus being confirmed in other countries around the world, such surfaces could be used in the future to quickly eliminate viral strains and reduce transmission risks.

A PDF summary of the technology related to light activated layers can be downloaded from the following link: Antimicrobial Coatings for Touch Surfaces.
