EO's Report Dom Courtney, Executive Officer
Summer has arrived again, and vast tracts of Queensland remain drought declared. Hopefully, summer rains will find the areas of our state that need it most. If you are looking for a Christmas present for the person who has everything, perhaps consider a donation to a drought relief charity on their behalf.
Participants in outdoor activities regularly make judgements about whether perceived risk is outweighed by the benefits associated with the activity. Sometimes this process is conscious and documented, but other times the risk/benefit assessment is done in an instant. The Australian Adventure Activity Standards, which are currently under development, aim to standardise practices across the country, with input from experienced people. If all adventure leaders adopt the suggested good practices or exceed what is recommended, the result will be more people having wonderful experiences in the outdoors, and fewer negative stories. Yours in the outdoors, rejoicing in the summer rain (even when it falls on my tent), Dom 2016 Queensland Outdoor Recreation Awards The decision to select an award winner is never easy and more so when faced with the exceptional quality of nominations this year.
