Key Messages Week 9 - Term 3From the Principal Dear Parents and Carers, As you are aware, I will be on secondment to Catholic Education from Week 3 of Term 4 until the end of next year. I am very pleased to announce that Stephanie O’Meara will be Acting Principal in Term 4 until the beginning of 2020. A further process will be conducted during Term 4 to appoint an Acting Principal from then until the beginning of 2021. I thank Steph for her generosity in taking on this role and, notwithstanding my sadness at being away from the community, feel very reassured that the College is in excellent hands. We are currently conducting a process to appoint an Acting Assistant Principal to take on Steph’s role and this will be announced in due course. As always, there are wonderful things happening in the College and I am exceptionally proud of the work our students are doing. Just two recent examples… Today a group of our students participated in the Climate Change rally. I was again very proud to see the passion of our students and their commitment to making a difference in the future of our world. Our senior students are at a critical time of the semester with regard to ensuring a successful result. After we return from holidays, they have only a very short amount of time before senior exams begin in Week 5. One of the dangers of the arrival of Spring and the holiday period is that senior students – particularly Year 12 students – can find it hard to keep up their motivation and give of their best once they return in Term 4. In fact, it is the time where they most need to be performing at their best. The holiday period itself and the final weeks of classes are their last opportunity to truly demonstrate their growth and maximise their results. Any encouragement you can give them to persevere and keep a very positive focus on their work will make a great difference. Catherine Rey Out of School Requirements Dear Parents & Carers, A quick note to highlight safety around student behaviour outside of school hours. It is important that there is awareness from the parent/carer around child behaviour when moving to and from school. It has been noted by members of the public that some of our students have been involved in behaviours that are concerning. Some of our students have been seen playing in drains, crossing roads in an unsafe manner and taking unnecessary risks with the light rail tracks. Please continue to talk with your child/ren about safety to and from school to ensure that behaviours are appropriate. It is also a timely reminder that members of the public do ring the school when they’re concerned about the safety and behaviour of our students, and that when in school uniform, students are representing the whole school community and should be acting accordingly. We appreciate your support of this. Learning Potential Learning potential is an app created by the Australian Government to assist parents with at home engagement and strategies for students of all ages. You can create different profiles that give you relevant resources for each age student that you have. The app provides assistance with not only wellbeing issues like mental health and puberty but assistance with curriculum areas like Mathematics, Science and English. In and Around the School Up, Up and AWAY….. with Flight at JPC! Earlier in Semester 1, JPC installed a X-Plane 11 Flight Simulator which has given our inaugural 10/11 Flight class a hands-on, realistic opportunity to learn how to take off, fly and land a plane in the comfort and safety of our JPC laboratory. This incredible technology was the initiative of our Flight teacher (and licenced pilot!), Dr Bill Li. “The flight simulator has been an awesome interactive experience which has allowed me to step into the shoes of pilots like our teacher, Dr Li, and fly the planes that they fly. It provides us with very real experiences where we fly planes under realistic conditions with identical controls to the real-life planes. Since beginning on the flight simulator, my practical knowledge and ability to apply what we learnt last semester has increased greatly, being able to put into practice and commit to muscle memory the basic steps needed to take-off properly, be able to achieve straight and level flight, and land properly. I would highly recommend the flight course because of its practical component where you are able to put the knowledge you have learnt to practice and fine tune it until you are competent, a level easily reached with the help of Dr. Li.” Cameron Cortes, Year 10 World Of Maths This Monday, Year 7 students attended the ‘World of Maths’ incursion. World of Maths is a hands-on roadshow which engages students in discovery and practical mathematical skills, developing student interest and engagement with Maths in new mediums. Year 7 students spent 90 minutes focusing on solving problems as a group from a range of activities, using maths skills from many different areas. Students were asked to make shapes using irregular pieces, navigate a ball through a maze, arrange trees on a lot with certain conditions and build bridges to reach a koala enclosure, among many others. Everyone had a great day and it was a really valuable opportunity to engage in maths in a practical, real life setting. I would like to thank our presenter Pak Lee and the World of Maths company for putting on such a fantastic day, the teachers who gave up their time to supervise and assist with the activities, and all the students for their immaculate behavior and representing JPC so fantastically well! Rohan Duddy Health & Physical Education (HPE) Day Yesterday we celebrated our own HPE Day at JPC in support of the National Day on the 12th of September. Students engaged in a number of activities including ILT energisers, yoga, mindfulness colouring, high catch competitions, and aerobics and it was wonderful to see so many students being active on the oval at recess and lunch. Thank you must go to the canteen staff who put on a super healthy green smoothie and embraced the day with kitchen decorations, the HPE Staff who developed and ran activities, the staff for embracing the activities and to the students for recognising this significant day. We hope that everyone used yesterday as an opportunity to reflect on their own physical, emotional and social health and discover the importance of the health and physical education curriculum in developing the whole person. PE Uniform, Injuries and Notes As a PE team, we are experiencing a number of students coming to school without their PE uniforms due to injury. While we appreciate the information and notes to explain particular circumstances, we wanted to enlighten you on our wonderful talents as PE teachers. The beauty of our training and experience is that we are able to modify activities in order to reduce harm and involve all students in our lessons, despite an injury. We ask that students who are injured come with a note to provide us with information BUT also with their PE uniform in order to be actively involved in physical education lessons. A reminder that the PE uniform includes the JPC branded top, shorts/track pants/tights and a change of socks and joggers with no alterations. Uniform discrepancies then follow our ‘strike’ system:
We appreciate your support and look forward to enriching all students through the physical activity curriculum. Ms Turner Year 9’s Chinese Culture Excursion Year 9 Chinese Elective students enjoyed a fabulous excursion on Thursday, 19th September. The trip began with them immersing into Chinese culture and history through visiting the Chinese Beijing Garden. The students expressed that they learned about the importance of the garden fostering diplomatic relations between Australia and China, as well as the sculptures around the garden that are representatives of a part of Chinese history. Students also responded delightedly when they tried traditional Chinese dishes such as Beijing duck on pancakes, pot stickers and fish fragrant pork mince serve with deep-fried buns. They had the experience of dining with chopsticks too. Our final stop was Mega Asian grocery at Dickson, where students visited the shop, browsing and noting down the varied flavours of Chinese food and snacks. All in all, students loved the enriching experience they have had in this excursion. Mrs Sarah Lim Soccer Gear Donations Dear JPC Community, David Johns and Carly Conlan are travelling to Timor-Leste in the next school holidays to deliver an education outreach workshop for Timorese teachers. Many communities in Timor-Leste are underprivileged but the East Timorese kids still enjoy playing sport just as much as Australian kids. As soccer is by far the most popular game we would like to collect as much secondhand soccer gear as possible to donate to the communities where we will be running the workshops. If you have any second-hand soccer boots, pads, socks, shorts and shirts that you would like to donate you can drop it off at the College Office any time before the end of the term. The East Timorese children and their families will, no doubt, be incredibly grateful for your generosity. Thank you for the donations we have already received. Kind regards, Carly Conlan Congratulations Congratulations to Bowyn Beatty for his selection in the Under-16 Australian Basketball Team. Information for parents/carers on the process of how to arrange Work Experience can be found on the JPC website CanteenCafeteria Corner This week was another sensational week at our cafeteria at JPC. The Berry CUP also known as ‘BERRYLICIOUS’ or ‘YOGHURT SURPRISE’ is a weekly favorite and continues to be well enjoyed and a regular sell out. The CUP has an overflow of Blueberries, Blackberries and Pomegranate in a delicious ‘lava’ of Greek Yoghurt - perfectly balanced and got us ready for the remainder of the school day. I have Friday ‘on my mind’ for the tempting ANZAC biscuits which I digested quite happily. Do you like crunchy, or chewy or crumbly………These cookies have the correct balance of all of these. I tell you what – Goldilocks would not have to think twice about eating these as they ‘were just right’!! Looking forward to next week, hoping the last week of term will bring out the very best from our Cafeteria ladies!! 😊 Regards Sarah and Taashi (Yr. 7)
