Violence between government and opposition forces broke out in South Sudan in December last year. Since then more than 1.2 million people have been displaced and many have been killed by ethnically targeted attacks. It’s estimated that over 3 million people are at immediate risk of hunger because farmers are unable to prepare land for fear of being murdered. Families and individuals, including unaccompanied minors, have sought safety in nearby camps, including Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, where Lutheran World Federation operates. The conflict forced many LWF team members to evacuate. Despite the insecurity, they have now returned to help the people, shifting their long-term development work to immediate relief. This is in the form of emergency kits, shelter, water, sanitation, and education and psychosocial support.
Soon you’ll receive an appeal from ALWS on the aid effort. In the meantime, we ask you to remember in your prayers those suffering in South Sudan, as well as their sisters and brothers in Australia. For further information, please contact ALWS on 1300 763 407 or at alws@alws.org.au
