GSC3 smart city alliance back in Australia in March

In November last year the Australian Dutch Smart City event took place during the Dutch trade mission to Australia. Part of the aim of this was to establish international collaboration between smart cities around the world, and more particularly collaboration on a mayoral level, through the GSC3 alliance.

So far the following Australian cities have joined the alliance: Adelaide, Bendigo, Canberra, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Ipswich and Moreton Bay, as well as the Greater Sydney Commission.

Due to such Australian interest in this collaboration model the Dutch-led GSC3 team will be back in March to follow up on the initial MoUs that were signed as well as to sign up at least two new cities.

During this visit in-depth meetings will take place with the Australian member cities, covering in particular what the Australian member cities would like to showcase to the world. Projects will be promoted on the website and during the visit 360 VR videos will be made enabling the mayors of the participating cities to showcase their city. Hopefully by showcasing these projects or plans other cities will be motivated to explore how they can collaborate on a best practices level, rather than reinventing the wheel.

While the main purpose of the website and the videos is to showcase Australian capabilities internationally, the videos will also be shown at the Adelaide ASCA National Smart City Conference in May.

Membership to GSC3 is certainly not limited to the current six member cities. If other cities are interested in joining, they might want to use the opportunity to meet with the GSC3 team when they visit Australia in March.

Moreover, it is interesting to note that the leadership status of the Netherlands in smart city developments was further underlined by the visit of The Hon Angus Taylor MP, Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation, and his team to the Netherlands at the end of January.

Huisman nominated for European Geothermal Innovation Award

Enhanced Casing Installation (ECI), a product of Huisman Well Technology, is nominated for the European Geothermal Innovation Award 2017. The European Geothermal Innovation Award is given to companies that have made an outstanding contribution towards the field of geothermal energy in the form of innovative products, scientific research or project initiatives.

ECI is an innovative retrievable casing installation system that allows drilling and installing casing simultaneously. The Huisman approach results in several functional and operational advantages:

  • ECI reduces risks related to hole problems such as stability, lost circulation and hole cleaning;
  • ECI reduces rig time and increases personnel safety (by minimising pipe handling and tripping);
  • Composite casing shoe tracks allow logging through casing: bottom hole assembly (BHA) with measurement while drilling (MWD) placed inside casing for minimum stick-out and optimum weight transfer and BHA stabilization.
