Giving Some Local Bills the Final Push!

HELPING HOMELESS VETERANS

SB 1580 would require the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs to conduct a study of homeless veterans in the state and make recommendations on how to help our heroes get back on their feet. These men and women have sacrificed so much for us, and we need to be sure to prioritize their basic housing rights moving forward. This bill has been voted out of the House committee, so please call your Representatives to support it!

CLEAN WATER IS A BASIC RIGHT

For several years, Suburban Utility Company has not been a good steward to the Aldine Community, often leaving residents, schools, and businesses without water for days at a time. Community members have recently rallied to hold the company accountable in court, but Representative Walle and I were concerned that the current laws do not protect families from this happening again. As such, we filed SB 1527 & HB 2284 to allow the Public Utility Commission to temporarily take over a bad water company until a new, responsible manager could be found. Clean water is a basic right for all human beings, and we intend to keep fighting to get one of these bills passed to ensure that our constituents have access to clean, safe water.

DANGEROUS & AGGRESSIVE DOGS

SB 708 would create a three-tier system in Texas of identifying aggressive and nuisance dogs before their behaviors escalated to dangerous and sometimes deadly levels. Houston is known for being one of the worst cities in the U.S. for dog attacks, and we know some of our children and elderly can barely go outside without being harassed on the street by problematic dogs. We intend to bring this bill up every year until our residents are protected because feeling safe in your community is a basic right.

MY TWO CENTS

Water, housing, and safety are just a few of the important areas that I am working to improve for you. In addition, my office is working on transportation, education, child care, healthcare, and many other bills that will have a direct impact on you and your families. Many of these bills started as ideas or concerns you voiced in our town hall meetings or civic clubs, which is why we have worked diligently to turn these ideas into bills to become law. However, just like you voiced your concerns to me, make sure other Senators and Representatives know what is important to you! Especially in the last ten days of the legislative session, every call and letter matters, so be sure to visit www.capitol.state.tx.us to find out where bills are in the process and who you can call. We'll see you at the finish line in June!

Putting People First,

Sylvia
