PNA HIGHLIGHTS & HAPPENINGS
For Black History Month 2022, we are partnering with our friends at the University Heights Center and Scarecrow Video to honor the history, impact, and achievements of the Black community. We've updated our website to highlight events (including a free screening of the classic film Within Our Gates), educational resources, and nonprofits that are Black-led and working to combat racism, lift up Black voices, and advance equity. We hope that you'll support their work!
We're thrilled that our Greenwood Senior Center's Gathering Place early stage memory loss programs are featured in the AARP Boosters for Joy guide! The guide shares great resources that can help reduce social isolation, including podcasts, videos, virtual art and music programs, and volunteer opportunities. Their recommendations are designed to engage the mind and increase connection during colder times.
February 15 is National Villages Day and this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Village Movement, as well as the 10th anniversary of our PNA Village! We're excited to mark these milestones and welcome the launch of a new Village on Vashon Island, Vashon Villages. Similar to our PNA Village, Vashon Villages brings neighborhood-focused, member-led, and volunteer-supported services, activities, and programs into the community. If you know older adults on Vashon, please share this new program! Out of caution with the pandemic, we are not planning an anniversary celebration this month. However, we are planning a 10-year anniversary party this summer. Stay tuned!
We kickstart the new year with our community at our Annual Meeting and Breakfast every January. Though we pivoted to an online-only event this year due to the pandemic, we were thrilled to safely bring our community together on Sat, Jan. 29 with our Annual Meeting livestream. Check out our recap blog and the livestream recording on YouTube to learn more!
Yonder Bar, a unique garage-based business on 1st Ave NW, is closing on Sat, Feb. 26 and you can still reserve a seat before it's done. Founder Caitlin Braam shared, “...we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate this amazing little space than by sharing a pint with those who made Yonder Cider and Yonder Bar possible—all of you!” Yonder Cider is very kindly donating all reservation fees to the PNA in
support of our community-driven work. Raise a pint at this special bar soon and then check out the new Yonder Cider-Bale Breaker Brewing taproom in Ballard.
Last week, four PNA Village members did a rough reading of a one-act farcical play by Molière, for an audience of about ten folks. This gathering marked the second iteration of the newest ongoing Village social group: the Play Group. On the first Thursday of each month, Villagers come together at the GSC to enjoy amateur theater and good conversation. Join them for the next group meeting on Thurs, March 3! Email us to RSVP.
Our Whittier Kids program recently debuted their WKids Paw Press student newsletter! It's written by our afterschool kids and contains interesting surveys (e.g. “if you were a chair, what kind would you be?), fun facts (mostly poop-related) and great articles. Check out a couple samples of their creative work!
