Wednesday 14 July 2021 Welcome to City of Wanneroo's Lagoon Lowdown newsletterWelcome to the second issue of the City of Wanneroo’s Yanchep Lagoon e-newsletter, The Lagoon Lowdown. This e-newsletter has been developed to keep the Yanchep and Two Rocks communities informed on the implementation of the Yanchep Lagoon Master Plan and broader area, including key initiatives and interesting bits of information for your community. Old Surf Club to become hospitality venueThe latest concept plans for the old Yanchep Surf Club site redevelopment (at Lot 10603 Brazier Road) are now available. Now’s the time to have your say on the proposed hospitality venue being planned by Be Our Guest Holdings. You may recall back in 2017, the City sought expressions of interest from the public, inviting candidates to identify redevelopment proposals for the site. Respondents were encouraged to present aspirational and iconic development ideas, as a way to activate the Yanchep Lagoon area. Be Our Guest Holdings proposed a high-quality hospitality venue, comprising beach bar, cafe, function space and short-term accommodation. Comments are sought by close of business 22 July 2021. For any queries, please contact jenna.whistler@wanneroo.wa.gov.au Let's be shadyThose of you who have visited the Yanchep Lagoon recently, will have noticed a selection of beautiful shade trees that have recently been planted in the surf club forecourt. The City of Wanneroo arranged for three red cottonwood (Hibiscus tiliaceus rubra) to be planted to provide much-needed shade for visitors to the lagoon. Due to the large size of the trees, they already provide a small amount of shade - and are expected to provide even more once summer arrives. The sail will provide a shady spot for members and the public to purchase snacks and drinks from the club's kiosk. Down the track, the area could have tables and chairs to encourage people to linger a little longer and enjoy the stunning coastal view. The sail has been stored for the gusty winter weather and will be back up in time for summer. Photo: The new shade sail at Come, take a seatThe City of Wanneroo has also explored many options for natural-looking seating , for people visiting the lagoon, in line with the Master Plan’s visions. New seating was recently installed within the surf club forecourt area. The chosen seating is made from natural, rich Merbau wood and the aluminum supports are powder-coated with the same green eucalypt colour that adorns the shade sail. The combination complements the organic, coastal palette for the Yanchep Lagoon enhancements. Photo: New seating at Bunting begone!Last financial year, the City provided an area of parallel parking bays along Capricorn Esplanade. The safety bunting has now been removed. These parking bays and the road reserve will ultimately be upgraded with permanent road treatments that reflect the Master Plan's visions. "I saw the sign..."As part of an ongoing initiative to better connect locals and visitors to the Yanchep Lagoon Precinct, the City has started preparing a suite of signage under the themes of ‘history’, ‘flora’ and ‘marine’. The first signs were installed at Mary Lindsay Homestead in 2020 and a new sign has recently been installed displaying historical information at Fisherman's Hollow. The City hopes to bring the individual areas within the Precinct to life and give visitors fun and interesting facts and photos to enhance your visit.
